Researchers at RMIT University have developed a prototype tube that folds flat for transport, then opens into a self-bracing structural form. Its curved-crease geometry takes inspiration from origami, while internal reinforcement is inspired by bamboo. In a reported demonstration, a 1.3 kg panel assembled from multiple tubes supported a 75 kg person; that result is a laboratory demonstration, not a certified load rating.
How the flat-pack tube deploys
The system is designed to address a practical trade-off: a structural tube is useful when deployed, but awkward to transport if it cannot be packed compactly. RMIT researchers Dr Jeff (Ting-Uei) Lee and Distinguished Professor Mike (Yi Min) Xie developed a tube that can be flattened and then opened into a braced tubular shape using curved-crease origami geometry. RMIT says it locks into place without extra mechanisms or human intervention. RMIT’s September 2024 announcement describes the design as a self-locking system.
New Atlas reports that the prototype is a polymer tube containing a row of laser-cut polyethylene discs. When pressure is applied at the tube’s fold lines, the discs shift from flat to curved and press against the tube’s inner wall, helping the tube stay open. This construction detail comes from New Atlas’s account; the available descriptions do not establish full manufacturing specifications.
What the bamboo inspiration means
Bamboo provides the biological inspiration for the tube’s internal reinforcement. The design borrows the broad idea that internal structures can help reinforce a hollow form; the available sources do not give a detailed anatomical comparison or quantify how closely the prototype reproduces bamboo.

The researchers frame the design as a combination of geometry and reinforcement. As Lee put it, “This self-locking system is the result of an intelligent geometric design.” Xie said the tubes are intended to be easy to transport when flat and strong enough to withstand external forces once deployed. These are descriptions of the research concept, not a specification for a construction product.
What the strength demonstration showed
RMIT reported that a 1.3 kg panel made from multiple tubes supported a 75 kg person. New Atlas adds that the demonstration platform measured 800 × 520 mm (31.5 × 20.5 in), used four tubes with a thin panel on top, and supported the person without deforming, including when suspended like a bridge.

Those figures describe one reported prototype demonstration. They are not a certified capacity, design allowable, or basis for assuming that a single tube—or another assembly of different dimensions, materials, or supports—will carry the same load. The available reporting does not establish performance under repeated folding, long-term exposure, or construction-site conditions.
Potential uses—and what remains unproven
RMIT says the design may be suitable for large-scale use and could improve existing deployable systems. Coverage of the design also identifies emergency-relief structures and space applications as possibilities. These are prospective uses, not documented deployments. The Kudos project summary gives further conceptual context, while the University of Queensland project page confirms the collaboration and points to the published coverage.

New Atlas reports that the researchers planned to explore different tube shapes and materials, as well as loading actions such as bending and twisting. The sources do not establish a retail product, certification, licensing, field performance, or readiness for safety-critical building applications. Conventional fold lines can leave a tube vulnerable to buckling, according to New Atlas’s explanation of the engineering rationale. The proposed geometry and internal bracing are intended to help the tube retain a stable deployed shape while preserving the transport advantage of a flat-packed form. The available sources do not provide comparative test data establishing a numerical performance advantage over conventional tubes.
