For Stronger Wood Joints, Use All-Thread Rod and Epoxy

WOOD Magazine’s shop tip replaces dowels and woodworker’s glue with all-thread rod and 5-minute epoxy. Here’s how to assemble it—and what its strength claim does not establish.

For a woodworking joint that allows some fitting adjustment, WOOD Magazine describes replacing wooden dowels and woodworker’s glue with all-thread rod and 5-minute epoxy. The method uses slightly oversized holes so the pieces can be aligned before the epoxy sets. The magazine says the epoxy-filled clearance retains the joint’s structural integrity, but it provides no independent test or load rating for this particular joint.

Materials and hole sizing

  • All-thread rod, in place of wooden dowels
  • 5-minute epoxy
  • Clamps

WOOD Magazine’s October 19, 2018 shop tip calls for holes in the same positions as a dowel assembly, with each hole about 1/16 inch larger than the rod diameter. This clearance is intended to allow adjustment during assembly. The article does not specify a rod diameter or length, wood species, or load case, so those choices must be determined for the particular project rather than inferred from the tip. WOOD Magazine’s original tip.

How to assemble the joint

  1. Drill holes where the dowel holes would go, making them about 1/16 inch wider than the all-thread rod.
  2. Thoroughly coat the rod with epoxy.
  3. Fill each hole about one-third full with epoxy.
  4. Assemble the pieces so epoxy fills the clearance around the rod, align them, and clamp.

The article does not give cure instructions for a particular epoxy. Follow the current label for the epoxy you choose, including its handling and cure directions.

What the method does—and does not—establish

WOOD Magazine says the rod’s clearance makes repositioning easier and that epoxy fills the gap while retaining structural integrity. That is the article’s performance claim, not a quantified strength comparison: it gives no test result, load rating, or evidence that this joint is stronger than a properly made dowel joint in a defined application.

Do not treat the tip as an engineered glued-in-rod connection or a concrete anchoring detail. Portland Bolt discusses epoxy-anchored rod in concrete and notes that construction substitutions require the Engineer of Record’s approval; that is a different application. Trade-offs to consider

  • Adjustment: The WOOD Magazine method’s oversized holes provide room to reposition parts before clamping. By contrast, Chicago Dowel describes wooden dowels as positioning guides that can remain hidden in a finished joint. Chicago Dowel’s dowel overview.
  • Reinforcement and appearance: This method uses metal rod rather than wood dowels. Whether the rod is visible depends on the design and how the joint is made; the tip does not prescribe a finish or concealment method.
  • Later disassembly: Do not assume an epoxy-bonded assembly can be taken apart cleanly. WEST SYSTEM describes its repair techniques as permanent and cautions that they may not suit projects requiring future disassembly or historically significant work. That guidance concerns its repair methods, not a test of this particular joint. WEST SYSTEM wood-repair guidance.

When this is a repair rather than a new joint

For a broken-wood repair, WEST SYSTEM describes a different technique that drills a hole and inserts a dowel or threaded rod with epoxy; in its illustrated repair it cautions against drilling all the way through. That guidance is specific to its repair context and should not be substituted for the WOOD Magazine assembly steps without considering the project. WEST SYSTEM wood-repair guidance.
