Kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts shape the room’s appearance, but choosing replacements also means checking cabinet compatibility, taking accurate measurements and confirming that nearby doors, drawers and trim can clear one another. This guide covers front materials and hardware, a practical replacement checklist, and basic alignment adjustments—with the important caveat that dimensions and adjustment methods depend on the cabinet system and hardware.
Choose fronts for appearance, care and cabinet compatibility
Front materials differ in appearance and care needs. IKEA describes wood and veneer as warm-looking options; foil, lacquer and melamine laminate as available in a range of finishes; and tempered glass as a way to display cabinet contents. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not an independent durability ranking. Consider the look you want, the care you are prepared to give the finish, and whether the fronts are made for your cabinet system. IKEA’s kitchen front guide provides its material descriptions.
Compatibility is specific to the cabinet line. IKEA states that its METOD fronts fit METOD cabinets; do not assume that statement applies to another cabinet system or another manufacturer’s fronts. Confirm the cabinet make and model with the supplier before ordering.
Choose knobs, pulls or push-open hardware
Hardware affects how a cabinet looks and how it feels to use. IKEA suggests handles for heavier drawers and knobs for doors, and describes push-openers as an option for a handle-free appearance. These are useful starting points, not universal rules: consider who will use the kitchen, the drawer load, the front design and the available mounting space. IKEA’s guide discusses knobs, handles and push-openers.

If you are changing hinges or drawer slides as well, confirm that the new hardware fits the cabinet construction and front. Lowe’s buying guide covers cabinet hardware selection and these fit considerations: cabinet hardware buying guide.
Measure and record openings before ordering replacements
There is no reliable universal measurement formula for every cabinet. Construction type, overlay or reveal, hinge position and the replacement supplier’s requirements all affect the dimensions you need. Follow the measurement instructions of the supplier you intend to use, and make a complete record before placing an order.

- Identify the cabinet system. Record the cabinet make or product line if known. Confirm whether the cabinets are framed or frameless, since that affects how fronts attach and sit over the openings.
- Sketch and label the kitchen. Number each door and drawer opening on a simple plan so measurements can be matched to the correct location.
- Record hinge sides and obstructions. Mark whether each door is hinged on the left or right. Note nearby walls, trim, appliances or other features that could interfere with a door or drawer when it opens.
- Measure each existing front as instructed. Record door and drawer-front dimensions individually. Kawartha Hardware advises measuring from the back where a front profile may affect measurement; use that supplier’s full instructions if ordering from them rather than treating the advice as universal. Kawartha Hardware’s measurement guide explains its process.
- Confirm fit details with the supplier. Ask how the system handles overlays or reveals, what hinge locations and clearances it requires, and whether your recorded dimensions are the ones needed to manufacture the fronts.
Check the movement of neighboring fronts as well as the opening itself. A drawer that clears its own cabinet may still collide with adjacent trim or a nearby door.
Adjust misaligned doors and drawer fronts
Many cabinet hinges and drawer-front mechanisms allow alignment changes, but the adjustment points and procedure depend on the specific hardware. Identify the cabinet and hardware instructions first; do not force a screw or mechanism that does not match the guide for your installation.

Cabinet doors
AyA’s adjustment guide describes three door-alignment directions: vertical height, horizontal side-to-side position, and in-and-out depth. Make small changes, then close the door and check its gaps against neighboring fronts before adjusting further. The precise screws and sequence vary by hinge. AyA’s Door & Drawer Adjustment Guide shows its hardware approach.
Drawer fronts
Drawer mechanisms may allow horizontal, vertical and tilt adjustments; AyA specifies tilt adjustment for gallery-rail systems. Check which system your drawer uses before attempting a tilt change. Kitchen Craft’s installation guide describes repositioning a drawer front by loosening its attachment screws, moving the front, and retightening them. That method applies to the product covered by its guide, not necessarily every drawer. Kitchen Craft’s drawer-front installation guide provides its instructions.
