WOOD Magazine lists it at about 19 inches long, 6 inches wide and 6 inches high with the bucket at ground level. The plan provides patterns and instructions; an optional specialty-hardware kit is sold separately.
What the plan makes
WOOD Magazine identifies the project as appearing in Issue 194, November 2009. Its plan page gives rounded overall dimensions of about 19 inches long by 6 inches wide by 6 inches high with the bucket at ground level.
The WoodworkersWorkshop project listing provides more precise dimensions and describes the toy as a way to scoop and move marbles or LEGO bricks. It lists a 19.1875-inch length, 6-inch width, 14-inch boom reach, 8-1/4-inch dig depth and approximately 0.00008-cubic-yard bucket capacity (3.75 cubic inches). These are listed project specifications, not independently tested performance measurements.
Materials, tools and plan format
The WoodworkersWorkshop listing specifies one 3/4 × 5-1/2 × 36-inch walnut board and one 3/4 × 5-1/2 × 48-inch maple board. Some parts are made thinner, so the full-thickness stock is not used for every component. Listed tools include a scroll saw, drill press, clamps and other common workshop tools.

The plan is listed in paper and PDF formats. Check the current retailer listing to confirm the format, delivery method and price before ordering; these details can change.
Plan versus hardware kit
The plan supplies the patterns and instructions for making the project. The optional kit is for specialty components, not a replacement for the plan or the lumber. The WOOD Store project listing says plans and project kits are sold separately and that lumber is not included with the kit. Schlabaugh & Sons lists a separate excavator hardware kit containing the wheels, axle pegs and hardware shown for the project, and says the plan is sold separately.

The plan page presents the excavator as a toy for moving marbles or LEGO bricks. WOOD Magazine writes: “Put this toy and a pile of marbles or Legos in front of a child and watch them while away the time scooping and moving them.” The listings reviewed do not state an age rating or formal child-safety certification. Do not treat the project description as a safety certification; assess the finished toy and its small parts for the intended child and use.
