A finish grade is not a universal outdoor-use certification. For weather exposure, check the exact model’s stated operating limits and whether an outdoor certification applies to the specific function or configuration. Residential BHMA categories and commercial certifications describe different contexts and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Schlage B60: a keyed deadbolt example
The B60 illustrates the features to compare in a conventional residential deadbolt: keyed exterior operation, an interior thumbturn, a reinforced strike and stated fit ranges. Schlage lists a 1- to 1-7/8-inch door-thickness range and a 2-3/8- or 2-3/4-inch backset. Schlage Arrive: a residential smart-lock option

- Identify the opening. Decide whether this is an ordinary residential entry door, a managed commercial opening, a pool gate or a specialized shelter application. Choose hardware designed for that use.
- Measure the door and existing preparation. Check door thickness, backset, bore and lock preparation, handing where relevant, and the strike and frame. Compare each measurement with the exact model’s instructions rather than assuming that a product labeled “exterior” will fit.
- Match the grade or certification to the concern. Compare residential security, durability and finish grades in their separate categories. For a commercial outdoor claim, confirm the standard, product function and configuration to which it applies.
- Check the actual exposure. Review model-specific temperature limits and any outdoor-type certification. Consider whether the exterior keypad or electronics will face direct weather and whether the interior body is in a different temperature environment.
