Ocean, a Tacoma startup formerly known as Eco-Shelter, is developing corrugated building panels made from engineered bamboo. GeekWire reported in November 2024 that founder Alexa Bednarz had raised more than $1.8 million from angel investors, alongside an additional $1.8 million in National Science Foundation support over the years. The company describes the panels as durable and lower-emissions, but the sources reviewed do not establish independent test results or confirm current sales availability.
What Ocean’s bamboo building panel is
Ocean’s panel is an engineered composite, not a sheet of untreated bamboo. GeekWire’s November 4, 2024 report describes bamboo being processed into strands, mixed with adhesive, formed into a mat, and pressed into a corrugated shape or another design. The article said Washington State University officials were filing a patent application for a product Ocean would license; that describes the reported status at the time, not a verified current patent or licensing status.
Ocean’s undated official product page describes the panel as more than 90% bamboo and says it comes in a 4-by-8-foot format. The company lists roofing in India, interior paneling, and wall assemblies as applications. Those listed uses are not a substitute for project-specific engineering approval or code documentation.
What the company says about performance and sustainability
Strength, moisture resistance, and service life
Ocean says its panel is stronger and stiffer than wood and more moisture-resistant than standard OSB. The product page reviewed does not provide test methods or comparative results, so these should be treated as company claims rather than established ratings. GeekWire reported that the panels have a paint coating intended to keep them cooler and quoted an expected service life of up to 25 years if properly maintained with paint or stains. That reported lifespan is not an independently documented field-study result.

GeekWire also reported a comparison with reinforced concrete, saying the panels were less expensive. No like-for-like cost basis, region, date-specific price, or installation assumptions were provided, so the comparison does not establish what a project would cost today.
Emissions and sourcing
Ocean says it sources bamboo directly from farmers in India and claims its product reduces CO₂ emissions by more than 99% compared with competing products. The official page reviewed does not state the comparison methodology or lifecycle-assessment boundaries, and no independent lifecycle assessment is established by the sources reviewed. The percentage is therefore Ocean’s claim, not an independently validated result.

What is known about Ocean’s funding and plans
GeekWire’s November 4, 2024 account reported that Ocean had raised more than $1.8 million from angel investors and had received an additional $1.8 million from the National Science Foundation over the years. These are figures reported at that date, not audited current lifetime totals. The same article said construction of a manufacturing facility was starting in India and that Bednarz expected sales in India and the United States the following year. That was a 2024 forecast; it does not confirm that production or sales began in 2025 or that the product is currently offered for sale.
GeekWire identified Bednarz as Ocean’s founder and CEO and reported that she conceived the idea during seven years at the Gates Foundation, where she worked on polio vaccine programs, oversaw investments, and managed global health projects. The article quoted her saying, “We’ve seen tremendous demand and opportunity for this product here in the U.S., and so much great support from our U.S. government and entities.” That is her characterization, not independent demand data. The report also noted showcase visitors asking, “Where can I buy this?”

- Current product availability, delivery location, installed cost, and whether the panel is approved for the specific roofing, wall, or interior application.
- Environmental documentation that identifies the comparison baseline and lifecycle boundaries behind any emissions claim.
There are no verified Ocean model variants or retailers in the sources reviewed, so a reliable product or price comparison cannot be made from them. For comparisons with OSB, metal roofing, concrete, or other materials, use equivalent application, structural and moisture data, installed cost, maintenance, service life, local availability, and independently documented lifecycle impacts.
