What Are the Different Types of Welding—and Which Is Best?

MIG, stick, TIG, flux-cored and other processes suit different jobs. Learn what distinguishes them and how to choose for construction work.

There is no single best type of welding: the right process depends on the metal, thickness, joint and welding position, required quality or code, work setting, production needs, available equipment, and operator skill. For many construction jobs, the practical choice is between MIG (GMAW), stick (SMAW), TIG (GTAW), and flux-cored (FCAW); other processes serve more specialized industrial applications.

How to choose a welding process

Start with the work and its requirements, not with a machine. List the base metals and their thicknesses, joint design, required welding positions, work location, production volume, and the required weld characteristics. Then determine whether a code or qualified welding procedure governs the work. The American Welding Society notes that process selection can be challenging when application and code requirements matter: AWS Aluminum Welding 101.

Once the job requirements are clear, check what power source, equipment, shielding gas, wire or electrodes, and operator experience are available. For a GMAW setup, shielding gas selection depends on the material, application, desired weld characteristics, and welding position; gas and consumables are not universally interchangeable. See AWS guidance on welding gas selection.

  • Material and thickness: Identify what is being joined and the section sizes involved.
  • Joint, position, and weld characteristics: Account for access and the required weld shape, penetration, and quality.
  • Work environment: Consider indoor or outdoor work, portability, and shielding needs.
  • Production demands: Match the process to the quantity and pace of work.
  • Equipment and consumables: Confirm the available power source and process-compatible supplies.
  • Skill and compliance: Check operator qualifications and applicable codes or approved procedures.

Common types of welding

MIG welding (GMAW)

Gas metal arc welding uses a continuously fed wire electrode and shielding gas. Its continuous-wire setup makes it a versatile, efficient process used in fields including automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing, according to the American Welding Society’s welding fundamentals overview. The process still has to suit the job: shielding gas and consumables must be selected for the material, application, desired weld characteristics, and position.

  • 【SUITABLT FOR MORE THAN 90% TYPES OF WELDING RODS】The portable welder great for AWS E6013, E6011, E6010, E7018, E308 1/16"-1/8"(1.6mm-3.2mm) welding rods can weld all kinds of metal. Since the welding rods in the kit are acidic rods, the electrode holder and earth clamp are connected to the "+" and "-" terminals, respectively. If using other types of welding rods, first determine the type of welding rod. If it is an alkaline rod, the electrode holder and earth clamp need to be connected to the opposite terminals.

Stick welding (SMAW)

Shielded metal arc welding uses a consumable electrode coated in flux. AWS describes field applications such as installing handrails and stairs and erecting open-web steel joists. Its use in field work makes stick worth considering when evaluating a construction job, but the specific requirements and conditions still determine whether it is appropriate. AWS contrasts SMAW with wire-fed GMAW in its welding fundamentals overview.

TIG welding (GTAW)

Gas tungsten arc welding forms an arc between a nonconsumable tungsten electrode and the workpiece, with shielding gas. Filler metal may be added, but it is not required in every application. AWS identifies uses in aerospace, nuclear, marine, petrochemical, and semiconductor industries; these examples describe the process’s range, not a recommendation for every job. See the AWS GTAW overview.

Flux-cored welding (FCAW)

Flux-cored arc welding uses a tubular, flux-filled wire. FCAW setups may be self-shielded or use additional shielding gas; these are distinct setup modes, so confirm what the machine and wire require. Miller’s multiprocess welder manual documents both modes: Miller manual.

Submerged arc and other processes

Submerged arc welding (SAW) is another major process family covered in AWS process and procedure resources. AWS also covers resistance and solid-state welding, plasma arc, and electroslag. These processes broaden the options available for industrial applications, but the cited resources do not establish detailed operating limits or an apples-to-apples comparison for each one. See the AWS Welding Handbook.

Brazing and soldering are allied joining methods, not other names for fusion welding. The Welding Handbook covers these and other joining methods alongside welding processes.

Which welding process is best for construction?

There is no construction-wide winner. Stick has documented field applications in work such as handrail and stair installation and steel joist erection, while other jobs may point toward GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, or a specialized industrial process. Choose against the actual material, joint, position, setting, production requirement, and governing procedure—not just the process name or machine type.

Aluminum illustrates why the choice depends on the job. AWS reports that industrial and construction fabrication commonly uses GMAW or GTAW. Its comparison describes GMAW as often useful for heat control, while GTAW offers control over deposited weld size and shape, joint penetration, and root reinforcement. Those are tradeoffs, not a universal ranking. See AWS Aluminum Welding 101.

When a multiprocess welder makes sense

A multiprocess machine can be a practical equipment path when the work genuinely calls for more than one process. Miller’s manual documents modes for SMAW, lift-arc GTAW, GMAW/FCAW, and self-shielded FCAW. That establishes that one machine category can cover several processes; it does not establish that any specific model is suitable for a particular project. Confirm the machine’s capabilities, power requirements, and compatible equipment and consumables against the job: Miller manual.

Codes, procedures, and safety

A process overview is not approval to perform code work. For a project governed by a code or qualified procedure, verify the applicable requirements for the material, procedure, personnel, and inspection with the responsible project authority. AWS provides standards and procedure resources, but the relevant requirements must be confirmed for the specific work.

Welding also requires safety controls suited to the process and worksite. Consult current authoritative safety guidance and applicable local rules for PPE, ventilation, and other controls before work begins. AWS provides welding safety resources; a general process overview is not a complete site-specific safety plan.
