The key is to score the measured panel lines, cut only to the crossing scores to form the flaps, then glue the side seam and base before closing the peaked top.
Choose a hand-cut pattern or a digital template
The hand-cut method below uses measured score lines on a standard letter-size sheet and needs no cutting machine. A digital template is a useful alternative if you already have a compatible file and cutting machine: its separate cut and score paths help define the folds. The available sources do not establish a reliable difference in time, cost, accuracy, or durability between the methods.
The digital template provider describes its own small box as 3 × 2 × 3 inches plus handle, and its large box as 4 × 2.5 × 4.5 inches plus handle. Those measurements apply only to that provider’s template, not the hand-cut pattern in this guide. The same provider recommends 65–110 lb cardstock for its designs; that is template-specific advice, not a tested requirement for the hand-cut dimensions. See the digital template options.

Make the hand-cut gable box
1. Cut the cardstock to size
Trim the sheet to exactly 8 1/2 × 11 inches if it is not already that size. For the measurements below, orient it so the 11-inch edge is the long side.
2. Score the panel and flap lines
Measure along the 11-inch edge and score at 1/2, 3 1/2, 5 3/4, and 8 3/4 inches. Then measure along the 8 1/2-inch edge and score at 3 and 6 1/2 inches. Keep the scores light: they mark fold positions, and you will fold them after cutting.

3. Decorate before assembly, if desired
If you want to stamp the panels, do it while the cardstock is flat. The cited tutorial suggests folding the short scored section under to expose the area to stamp. Decoration is optional; avoid adding bulky items where the panels or flaps need to meet.
4. Cut the bottom flaps
Use scissors to cut along each score line only as far as its intersecting score line. These cuts divide the lower area into separate flaps while keeping the box connected. On the edge with the half-inch flaps, cut away the two end flaps and leave the center flap in place. Do not cut through the crossing scores or remove the base as one piece.

5. Add adhesive and punch the handle
Apply strong adhesive to the half-inch side tab and the flaps indicated by the pattern. If using adhesive strips, leave their release liners on until you are ready to position the pieces. For the handle shown in this design, center a wide oval punch over the appropriate panel and punch through the cardstock. Round the handle corners if you have a corner rounder and want a softer edge.
6. Join the side seam and form the base
Bring the side panels together and press the half-inch tab firmly against the adjoining panel to close the seam. Before the adhesive sets, check that the panels meet squarely. Fold and adhere the bottom flaps to create the base, following the pattern’s flap orientation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using a digital template instead
For a machine-cut design, use a template that provides distinct cut and score paths. Follow its own file instructions: score before folding, glue the side seam, and fold the gable top and bottom flaps closed. Cardstock guidance varies by design. One template provider recommends 65–110 lb cardstock for its files, while a separate shaker-style project listing recommends 80 lb for that project; neither recommendation is a universal requirement. The shaker-style project offers SVG, DXF, PDF, and PNG formats and describes both hand cutting and machine cutting. Template designs and material guidance · Shaker-style project formats.
