Start with records, then usable household goods, electronics, batteries, and leftover household products. Donation acceptance and disposal rules vary by location, so check with the recipient or local authorities before taking items anywhere.
How to work through the list
- Choose one category. Set a short timer and tackle paper, clothing, kitchen items, electronics, or leftover household products separately.
- Make four groups: keep, donate or reuse, recycle, and check local special-disposal instructions. Give anything you cannot decide on a specific decision date rather than letting it become a permanent “maybe” pile.
- Check requirements before items leave home. Review record-retention guidance, confirm donation acceptance, and identify the correct route for electronics, batteries, or chemicals.
- Complete the handoff. Take the items you have decided to remove to their intended destination; moving them into a hallway or garage is not the finished step.
Paper and records: check before shredding
Do not treat year-end as a reason to purge paperwork indiscriminately. The Federal Trade Commission’s June 2025 consumer guidance groups records by how long they may be needed. Its categories are a starting point, not a substitute for checking your own legal, tax, or financial circumstances. The IRS may recommend longer retention in some situations.

The FTC also lists examples that may be candidates for shredding, including ATM receipts, credit offers, cleared checks after 14 days, credit reports, old prescription information, expired warranties, and expired IDs. Confirm that a document is no longer needed before destroying it. For papers containing personal or financial information, the FTC’s advice is: “When it’s time to dispose of documents with your personal or financial information, shred them.” The FTC also suggests looking for a local shred day if you do not own a shredder. Clothing, furniture, books, and household goods
Set aside goods that are clean, intact, and functional for donation or reuse. Keep broken, unsafe, or unwanted items out of donation bags unless a recipient confirms it accepts them. Check the organization’s current rules before loading a vehicle; acceptance varies, and a donation is not automatically a tax deduction.

For a charitable deduction, IRS Publication 526 (2025) generally requires donated clothing and household items to be in good used condition or better. The publication describes an exception for certain deductions over $500 involving a qualified appraisal and Form 8283. A receipt by itself does not establish that a donation qualifies for a deduction or prove its value. If tax treatment matters, consult the current IRS Publication 526 and keep the required records. Household items for this purpose can include furniture, electronics, appliances, linens, and similar goods.
Electronics: protect your data before reuse or recycling
Before donating, selling, trading in, or recycling a computer or phone, back up the files you want to keep and remove personal information. Deleting individual files is not the same as following the device’s reset or erasure process.

Computers
- Back up files you want to keep.
- Use the operating system’s reset process to erase the hard drive.
- Choose an appropriate donation or recycling route.
See the FTC’s computer disposal guidance for its instructions.
Phones
- Back up wanted data.
- Remove the SIM card and any SD card, if present.
- Reset the phone to erase personal information.
If your phone number is changing, update it on accounts that use it for identification. Authenticator apps may also need reactivation. Follow the FTC’s phone disposal guidance for details.

Decide whether a working device can be reused
A charity may be able to use a slightly outdated gadget if it still works. Include accessories needed to operate it, and check acceptance before dropping it off; the FTC’s electronics donation advice explains this option. For recycling, the EPA’s electronics guidance recommends removing personal information and checking local facilities. Manufacturer and retailer programs may also be available. EPA links to collection programs but does not endorse their services.
For larger or sensitive electronics recycling decisions, EPA’s guidance recognizes R2 and e-Stewards as accredited certification standards. Certification includes independent audits and continuing oversight. The agency’s page was updated July 31, 2026; use its certified electronics recycler guidance to understand the standards and options.

Batteries and hazardous household products need their own route
Lithium-ion batteries and devices that contain them
Do not put lithium-ion batteries or devices containing them in household garbage or curbside recycling bins. EPA says they require proper disposal; check your state or community instructions for an appropriate facility or collection program. Its electronics guidance covers battery disposal.
Leftover chemicals and other hazardous products
Some household products can be corrosive, ignitable, reactive, or toxic. EPA classifies certain such leftovers as household hazardous waste, but state and local authorities regulate household hazardous waste as solid waste. Check your municipal or county solid-waste or hazardous-materials office before moving or discarding these products. Use a designated collection site or event where local instructions require it. Quick keep, donate, recycle, or dispose-of check
- Keep: Records still within their relevant retention period, useful belongings, and items you need or value.
- Donate or reuse: Clean, functional goods that a recipient confirms it accepts. Prepare electronics by backing up and erasing data first.
- Recycle: Items accepted by an appropriate local program, after removing personal data from electronics. Keep lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them out of household bins.
- Check local special disposal: Leftover hazardous household products, and any other item whose disposal rules are unclear.
- Shred: Sensitive personal or financial documents only after confirming you no longer need them.
