The best ductless range hood is one that fits your cooking area, supports the right recirculation setup and has replacement filters you can maintain. Ductless hoods filter kitchen air and send it back into the room; they do not vent cooking heat, humidity and smoke outdoors. The examples below show what to compare, not an independently tested ranking.
What a ductless range hood does—and does not do
A ductless hood, also called non-vented or recirculating, draws air through a grease filter and a charcoal filter, then returns filtered air to the kitchen. GE Appliances describes this filtration process as removing odors. It is not the same as exhausting air outside: Broan-NuTone notes that non-ducted filters capture some grease and odors, while humidity, smoke and heat are recirculated indoors.
That trade-off matters when choosing a hood. Recirculation can be a practical option where exterior ducting is unavailable, but it should not be treated as equivalent to outdoor exhaust or assumed to remove cooking pollutants to the same degree.
Two documented options to compare
These manufacturer listings illustrate different configurations. The available evidence does not establish a market-wide “best” model through independent comparative testing.

How to choose the right ductless hood
Start with width and installation fit
Check the hood width against the cooking surface and the available cabinet or wall space. Confirm the model’s mounting requirements, clearances and recirculation outlet location in its installation instructions before buying. A hood that is too large for the space or cannot be mounted with the required clearances is not a workable choice, regardless of its fan specifications.
Check whether it is ductless-only or convertible
A non-ducted-only model, such as the Broan-NuTone 413023, is intended for recirculation. A convertible hood can support ducted or non-ducted installation, but recirculation may require a model-specific kit and charcoal filters bought separately. Confirm exact part compatibility rather than assuming that a generic kit or filter will fit.

Compare included filters and replacement needs
Find out whether a grease filter and charcoal filter are included, what replacement parts cost and how readily they are available. Filter arrangements differ by model. GE says grease filters can be washed with soap and water or in a dishwasher, although they may discolor; charcoal filters cannot be cleaned. GE advises replacing a charcoal filter when odors become detectable in the hood’s exhaust. Follow the manual for the model you buy.

Look at fan and sound details without overreading them
Compare the available fan speeds and published sound information, but only treat sound figures as directly comparable when their measurement conditions and configurations match. The Broan listing gives a 3.5-sone sound level; that figure alone does not establish that it is quieter or louder than another hood whose test conditions may differ.
Include accessories and warranty in the comparison
For a convertible hood, add the cost and availability of the required recirculation kit and filters to the purchase decision. Check the warranty terms for the exact model as well: the Broan listing specifies a limited one-year warranty, while the Whirlpool product information cited above does not state a comparable warranty term.

Filter upkeep and replacement timing
Grease filters and charcoal filters have different maintenance roles. Clean a washable grease filter according to the manual; do not try to wash a charcoal filter that the manufacturer identifies as non-cleanable. Charcoal filters gradually lose odor-control effectiveness and are a recurring replacement item.
Broan-NuTone’s general guidance is to replace charcoal filters every three to six months, depending on cooking frequency and type. That is manufacturer guidance, not a universal schedule: use the exact hood manual, watch for any filter indicator, and replace the filter with one specified for the model.

Installation and ventilation considerations
For a ductless installation, use the hood’s instructions to verify mounting clearances, filter placement and where the recirculated air exits. If installing a convertible hood in ducted mode, Broan-NuTone recommends keeping the outdoor duct short and straight, with the shortest route and few turns. Ventilation-program requirements should not be mistaken for a universal local-code ruling. EPA’s U.S. Indoor airPLUS Version 2 verification requirements, updated September 12, 2024, generally call for demand-controlled kitchen exhaust vented outdoors. The document allows a narrow multifamily exception: a charcoal-filter recirculating hood above an electric cooktop can be used with specified continuous outdoor-exhaust rates. EPA explicitly excludes one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses from that exception. Read EPA’s Indoor airPLUS Version 2 requirements and check applicable local requirements for your project.
EPA also emphasizes verified airflow and sound ratings and recommends range-hood capture efficiency of at least 70% when tested under the referenced standard. A ductless hood should not be presumed to meet that capture recommendation or to provide the pollutant removal of outdoor exhaust.
