For an enclosed trailer where people will work or sleep, the best starting point is a heater designed for RV or vehicle use, installed exactly as its manufacturer specifies. Favor a system that routes combustion exhaust outside and keeps it separate from cabin air. A forced-air diesel heater is one possible off-grid solution; electric heat can work when shore power and the circuit can support it. Do not use an unvented portable propane heater for sleeping in an enclosed trailer.
There is no universal best model or heat output: the right choice depends on trailer size, insulation, climate, available power and fuel, and whether people will sleep inside.
Choose the heating approach for how you use the trailer
Warming cargo in an attended trailer, working inside for a few hours, and sleeping overnight are different use cases. Decide which applies before comparing products. For occupied or sleeping spaces, equipment intended for vehicle or RV use is a more appropriate starting point than a portable camping heater.
For any fuel-fired system, combustion air and exhaust routing matter. Planar’s 2018 flyer describes its 2D/4D forced-air diesel heater family as keeping exhaust gases, including carbon monoxide, separate from heated air. That is a description of the manufacturer’s design, not a guarantee that every diesel heater or installation is safe. Check the exact model’s current manual and have the system installed according to its instructions and applicable local requirements.

Compare the main heater options
| Option | What it offers | Questions to check | Key caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installed fuel-fired air heater | Webasto lists fuel-operated heaters for RVs and commercial vehicles; Planar describes a forced-air diesel option for camper trailers. Webasto air heating; Planar 2D/4D flyer (2018). | Does the specific model suit the trailer? Where will combustion intake and exhaust run? What fuel, 12-volt supply, clearances, and service access does it need? | Suitability and installation are model-specific. The 2018 flyer does not establish current specifications or universal fit. |
| Hydronic RV heating | Truma describes Alde heating as circulating warmed glycol through convectors. The Compact 3030 is listed for travel trailers and motorhomes and uses propane and electricity. Alde heating; Alde Compact 3030. | Is the system included by the trailer manufacturer or being retrofitted? What are the installation, servicing, fuel, electrical, and heat-distribution requirements? | The cited Compact 3030 is described as available for OEM installation, not as a simple portable purchase. |
| Portable electric heater | It avoids on-board fuel combustion, but only works if the available electrical supply supports the heater. | What shore-power connection and circuit are available? Can the heater be monitored and positioned on a stable, level surface with clearance from combustibles? | No trailer-specific electrical load calculation or product comparison is established here. Do not assume a trailer outlet or generator can support a particular heater. |
| Portable propane radiant heater | Some models are marketed for portable heat, but their permitted use depends on the exact model and its instructions. | Does the manual explicitly allow the intended enclosed-space use in your jurisdiction and for the planned occupancy? | Do not infer enclosed-space suitability from an oxygen-depletion sensor or tip-over switch. The reviewed Mr. Heater Canadian Little Buddy manual prohibits that model in enclosed spaces such as campers; that labeling is model- and jurisdiction-specific. Little Buddy manual. |
Do not use a portable fuel-burning heater while sleeping
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says: “Do not use portable heaters or lanterns while sleeping in enclosed areas such as tents, campers, and other vehicles.” Its broader guidance also warns against using portable fuel-burning camping appliances inside vehicles or other enclosed spaces unless the appliance is specifically designed for that use and its instructions allow it. CPSC carbon monoxide guidance; CPSC camping safety guidance.
A carbon-monoxide alarm is a backup layer, not permission to use unsuitable equipment. CPSC advises following appliance instructions and local codes, and says an alarm does not replace proper use and upkeep. It recommends alarms meeting the current UL 2034 standard. Keep an alarm maintained and uncovered, and follow its own placement and care instructions.

Use electric heat only within the available electrical capacity
Before choosing a portable electric heater, confirm the ratings of the heater, trailer wiring, shore-power connection, and any generator or other supply. The available information does not establish a load calculation for a particular trailer, so do not assume a typical outlet can run a chosen heater safely. Follow the heater’s instructions and CPSC placement guidance: use a stable, level location, keep it at least three feet from combustible items, and do not leave it running unattended in a confined space. CPSC heating-equipment guidance.
Never run an engine-driven generator inside the trailer or in an enclosed space. CPSC warns that open doors or windows do not make generator operation in or near an enclosed space safe. CPSC camping safety guidance.

Size the heater for the actual trailer
The available sources do not establish a required BTU output for an unspecified trailer. A meaningful sizing decision needs, at minimum:
- Interior dimensions and layout
- Insulation, air leakage, and door or window condition
- Expected outdoor design temperature and desired indoor temperature
- Whether people will sleep inside or the trailer will be occupied only while attended
- Whether plumbing, equipment, or cargo also needs freeze protection
- Available fuel, electrical capacity, and installation space
Use those details with the heater manufacturer or a qualified RV/vehicle-heating installer to identify suitable capacity and installation requirements. A model’s published specifications describe that product; they are not an independent comparison or proof that it will heat a different trailer adequately.

Verify the product and installation details before buying
- Identify the exact heater and intended use. Confirm that the manufacturer lists it for the relevant vehicle or RV application and that its instructions allow the planned occupancy and operating conditions.
- Read the current manual. Check fuel and electrical requirements, combustion intake and exhaust routing, clearances, mounting, service access, and any restrictions. Do not rely on a general product description in place of the model-specific instructions.
- Check installation and local requirements. CPSC advises installation and operation according to manufacturer instructions and applicable codes; it notes that most appliances should be installed by qualified professionals. Requirements depend on jurisdiction and use. CPSC carbon monoxide guidance.
- Plan for carbon-monoxide protection and maintenance. Install and maintain an appropriate alarm as directed, but do not treat it as a substitute for correct equipment, installation, or operation.
- Confirm current availability and specifications. Product listings and model details can change. Verify them with the manufacturer or authorized supplier before purchase.
