Start with one useful task—not a brand list. A smart plug for a lamp or an easy-to-install bulb can be a simple first step; then choose a product whose exact model works with the phone app or voice assistant you already use. Tapo and Wyze are two brands with relevant connected-home products, but the available evidence does not establish a third brand or support ranking three brands by price or quality.
What should you automate first?
Pick a small, specific job that would make daily life easier. The right first device depends on that job, your home, and how you want to control it.
- Control a lamp or suitable appliance: consider a smart plug, after checking that the appliance is appropriate for plug-based control.
- Change how a room is lit: consider a smart bulb and check its fit with your existing fixture and lighting setup.
- Keep an eye on an entry point: look at the camera or sensor category, and factor in installation and any ongoing service costs.
- Improve access: a smart lock is a different kind of project; check the specific product, installation requirements, and platform support before buying.
For renters or anyone avoiding permanent changes, prioritize plug-in devices and products that can be mounted without wiring or permanent alterations. Check the installation instructions for the exact model before purchasing.
How do Tapo and Wyze fit?
These are examples to investigate, not a tested ranking or a claim that either is the cheapest. Their catalogs cover overlapping but not identical connected-home categories.

Check platform compatibility at the model level
Do not assume every product from a brand works with every ecosystem. Before choosing, look up the exact model and confirm support for the platform you intend to use—such as Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, or SmartThings. Check what the listing means by “works with” and whether setup requires a particular app, controller, or other device.

Matter can help compatible devices work with supported smart-home platforms, but the label is not a blanket guarantee for an entire brand. TP-Link’s guidance describes Matter as requiring a Matter-certified device, a Matter controller, and a managing app. Confirm that the specific product is certified and that your controller and app support the setup you want. TP-Link says: “Matter is designed to work alongside existing platforms. You can still use your preferred smart home apps.” This is a vendor statement, not an independent test.
Work out the complete cost before you buy
A low device price is only one part of a budget decision. Check the costs and constraints for the whole setup before you commit:

- Device: compare current prices for the exact models you are considering. No comparable current prices are established here, so there is no defensible “cheapest” winner.
- Controller or hub: determine whether your intended setup requires one, and whether you already own a compatible controller.
- Optional services: check whether the features you want depend on a recurring subscription or cloud service.
- Installation: account for whether the product is plug-in, adhesive-mounted, or wired, and whether your home can accommodate it.
- Next device: consider whether the brand also offers the category you are likely to add later, so expansion does not force an avoidable change of setup.
A practical buying sequence
- Name the task. Decide whether you want to control a plug-in device, change lighting, monitor an entry point, or address another specific need.
- Choose the product category. Compare products intended for that task rather than comparing brand names in the abstract.
- Check the exact model. Confirm compatibility with your phone platform, voice assistant, or smart-home app, plus any controller or hub requirement.
- Check installation and ongoing costs. Read the model’s setup requirements and identify any optional service charges relevant to the features you plan to use.
- Compare the complete setup. Include all required equipment and choose a product that fits your home and the next category you may want to add.
What a “budget brand” comparison can—and cannot—tell you
“Budget” has no single useful meaning unless you define it: it could mean an inexpensive starter device, a ceiling for the price of one product, or a maximum cost for a complete setup. Without a country, a price ceiling, and three named brands, a ranked list would imply a comparison that the available facts cannot support.
For now, treat Tapo and Wyze as starting points for checking product ranges, not as a verdict on price or reliability. Compare exact models against your task, existing ecosystem, installation options, controller needs, and ongoing costs. Store catalogs and compatibility details can change, so verify them for the product and market you intend to buy in.
