The Esch 22 Space Station, also called “E22SS PIU!” or “Pump it up!”, is a built experimental sleeping hut—not a tiny home for sale. Towed as a stainless-steel trailer, it unfolds two wings into a circular platform, then inflates a double-shell pneumatic dome to create its sleeping space.
What is the Esch 22 Space Station?
Luxembourg architecture firm 2001 designed the mobile hut for the City of Esch-Alzette as a cultural project connected to the city’s Capital of Culture 2022 program. The project record lists it as built, with execution from 2021 to 2023, and gives a surface area of 92 square meters.
Its purpose is to let people experience different contexts and environments in Esch. The architects describe the project as an exploration of society’s relationship to soil, water and energy. That is a design intention, not evidence of measured environmental savings.
How does the inflatable house expand?
- In transit: The structure is carried as a stainless-steel trailer.
- On site: Two wings unfold from the trailer to form a circular platform measuring nine meters in diameter, according to the architect’s project page.
- For sleeping: A double-shell pneumatic dome inflates on the platform to form the enclosed habitat.
Fox News reported that inflation can take as little as 15 minutes. The architect’s project page does not state a setup time, so treat that figure as a secondary-source report, not a published specification from the firm.

What is inside, and how many people can stay?
The architect describes E22SS PIU! as a six-person hut. That design capacity differs from the current accommodation listing, which says the guesthouse can host up to four people.
New Atlas reports that the lower level includes a bathroom and compact kitchen, while the upper sleeping room is open and uses inflatable mattresses. The same report says wastewater from the sink and shower is reused to flush the toilet; this is a reported feature, not a published measure of water savings.

Visitors can inquire about staying at “Pump it up!” through the Simpleviu / Kabaisercher accommodation listing. It gives the location as 6 Ellergronn, Esch-sur-Alzette, and lists a maximum of four guests. Booking terms and availability can change; check the listing for current details.

What is not established about its performance?
The project’s distinctive deployment is documented, but the available project and accommodation pages do not establish weather limits, structural certifications, insulation performance, energy use, operating cost or long-term reliability. Those details matter when comparing it with an everyday dwelling, and should not be inferred from the pneumatic design or its stated environmental aims.
