A good hand-plane rack fits the planes you own, protects their edges from unwanted contact, and works with the wall or bench space available. WOOD Magazine lists a downloadable plan intended for either wall or benchtop use and says it can be customized to a collection, but the public listing does not provide the plan’s drawings, dimensions, or cut list. Treat it as a starting point to evaluate—not a source for unverified measurements.
Choose a rack style that suits your shop
Rack designs trade off visibility, footprint, separation, and ease of access. These are practical differences suggested by published project descriptions, not the results of a comparative test.

Measure the planes before sizing the rack
Lay out the planes you intend to store before deciding on the back panel, shelf lengths, or bay widths. Kreg’s project likewise starts by arranging the tools and checking the available space. Measure each tool’s overall length and width, and note its handles, base, and blade position; the cited projects do not establish a universal dimension set.
Allow for future additions if you expect the collection to grow. A close-fitting layout may waste less space, while extra room can make planes easier to remove and return. Long planes deserve particular attention: Woodcraft notes that a No. 8 plane spans two feet, a figure about that plane rather than a standard rack dimension.

Keep blades clear and planes separated
Where planes rest on shelves, a shallow groove aligned with the blade location can help position the tool; Kreg’s example also includes a retaining lip. Check the actual blade position on each plane before transferring that feature to your design, rather than assuming every plane will sit in the same place.
Individual bays offer another way to prevent planes from contacting one another. Woodcraft presents cubbies as protection for edges. In a different approach, Randall Baker’s Fine Woodworking rack positions its magnetic holder so the blades miss or barely touch the plywood backer. In his personal design, the magnet stands about 1/16 inch proud of the wood; that is a detail of his rack, not a universal clearance requirement.

Adapt the project to the installation
A wall-mounted rack must suit both its contents and its mounting surface. Published examples use wall cleats or a back panel, but they do not provide a generally applicable load rating or fastener specification. Choose mounting hardware and attachment points for the wall construction, rack, and stored tools; do not treat an example’s layout as proof that a particular installation is safe.
For a benchtop version, check where the rack will sit and whether planes can be lifted out without colliding with nearby tools or work. The WOOD Magazine listing supports wall or benchtop placement, but does not disclose the downloadable plan’s dimensions or construction details in its public listing.

A practical layout sequence
- Choose the location. Decide whether the rack will be wall-mounted or benchtop, then measure the usable wall or bench area.
- Lay out the collection. Arrange the planes in the intended orientation. Include the longest tools and allow room to grasp and remove each one.
- Mark contact and clearance points. Note where bases, handles, and blades fall. Decide whether shelves with blade-aligned grooves or separated bays best suit the layout.
- Set the capacity. Size the layout for the current collection and any additions you want to accommodate, then check that every plane has a clear place to go.
- Resolve mounting or stability. For a wall rack, determine how the rack will attach to the specific wall. For a benchtop rack, confirm its footprint will not interfere with shop work.
- Test the layout before finalizing it. Place the planes in their intended positions and check that edges do not strike other tools or the backer, and that each plane can be taken out and returned comfortably.
What the published plans do—and do not—specify
WOOD Magazine’s public listing identifies a customizable hand-plane rack plan for wall or benchtop use, but does not expose drawings, dimensions, or a cut list. The other cited projects offer useful design ideas—such as blade-aligned shelf grooves, individual bays, magnetic support, cleats, and cord retention—but their examples should not be mistaken for a single standard design. Use the features that fit your planes and installation, and establish your own dimensions from the actual tools.
