How to Water Succulents Without Killing Them

Water succulents deeply, let the pot drain, and wait until the soil is dry before watering again. Soil checks matter more than a fixed schedule.

Water a succulent thoroughly, let the excess drain, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. Check the soil rather than following a fixed calendar: the right interval changes with the plant, season, light, pot, mix and growing conditions.

How to water a succulent

  1. Check drainage. Make sure the pot has an open drainage hole and that its saucer or decorative outer pot is empty.
  2. Check the soil several inches down. If it is still damp, wait and check again later. Iowa State University Extension suggests using a chopstick: if it comes out darkened and moist, the plant does not yet need water. Iowa State Extension’s indoor succulent guide explains this approach.
  3. Water when the mix is dry. Pour water onto the soil until it runs freely from the drainage hole, wetting the root ball.
  4. Let the pot drain fully. Empty the saucer or cachepot; do not leave the pot standing in drained water.
  5. Wait for the next dry-down. Check the soil again instead of automatically watering on a set date.

This wet-dry cycle is the central advice from Iowa State and Illinois Extension: water deeply, then allow the soil to dry before watering again. Misting is not established by these sources as a substitute for watering the root zone.

How often should you water succulents?

Indoor plants

Iowa State and Illinois Extension give every two to three weeks as a general starting interval for indoor succulents, not a guarantee. Soil, light, humidity and the container affect how quickly a plant dries. If the soil is damp at the scheduled check, wait; if conditions change, the interval may change too. In winter, Illinois advises less frequent watering, with some winter-dormant plants needing water only a couple of times during the season.

Outdoor plants

Outdoor frequency depends on species, local climate and weather. A UC Agriculture and Natural Resources regional handout gives watering every seven to ten days during active growth from spring through fall, and no more than every three to four weeks for winter-dormant plants. Treat those as that handout’s regional guidance, not a schedule for every garden. It recommends thorough watering and letting the soil approach dryness.

Choose a pot and soil that can drain

Use a pot with a drainage hole and a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Iowa State offers a DIY mix of one part organic material to two parts mineral material, such as perlite, coarse sand, pumice or fine gravel; it is one option, not a universal formula. The UC ANR handout recommends cactus and palm potting mix.

  • Do not rely on gravel at the bottom. A gravel layer does not replace a drainage hole. Iowa State warns it can leave the plant too wet, and UC ANR says gravel at the bottom makes drainage worse.
  • Handle decorative pots carefully. If the outer vessel has no hole, keep the succulent in a smaller draining nursery pot inside it. Remove the inner pot to water, or make sure no water pools in the outer container.
  • Expect pot material to affect drying. UC ANR notes terracotta loses water faster than glazed pots, so terracotta may need more frequent checks. Its handout also recommends shallow pots with drainage holes.

Read the plant and soil together

Signs that may point to excess water

Yellowing, soft or mushy leaves or stems, leaf drop and persistently wet soil can indicate too much moisture. Mold or fungus gnats may appear in severe cases. Stop watering, allow the mix to dry, check that the drainage hole is clear and empty any standing water. If the mix retains too much moisture, consider repotting into a faster-draining medium.

Signs that may point to dryness

Wrinkled, shriveled or browning leaves can suggest the plant is too dry. Check the soil first; if it is dry, water thoroughly and let the pot drain. Do not diagnose from leaves alone: root rot can prevent roots from absorbing water and make a plant look thirsty, so adding more water may worsen the problem.

When symptoms do not fit

If the soil is dry but symptoms persist, inspect the roots and growing medium rather than repeatedly watering. Severe root rot may not be recoverable, though healthy segments may sometimes be propagated. A dried lower leaf or two on a healthy, growing rosette succulent can be normal and is not, by itself, proof of a watering problem. Weak, pale or lanky growth may also reflect insufficient light; Iowa State recommends bright indirect light for indoor succulents.

Adjust for season and species

Succulents are a diverse group, so dormancy is not always in winter. UC ANR notes that some rest in winter and others in summer; dormant plants need little water but still need light and fast-draining soil. Reduce watering during a plant’s slower-growth or dormant period, but use the species and observed soil moisture—not a universal seasonal timetable—to guide decisions.
