Evergreens can screen a view, anchor a yard, frame an entrance, or keep a bed’s edges green through winter. The six categories below describe those landscape roles—not a formal botanical classification. Choose plants by mature size, site conditions, and regional suitability; “evergreen” means foliage is retained through the year, not that a plant is maintenance-free or suited to every climate.
1. Screening and windbreak trees
Use evergreen trees when you need year-round screening or shelter from wind, but allow for their mature height and spread. Oregon State University Extension Service says, “Conifers are the best choice for windbreaks and privacy screens.” That is general selection guidance, not a guarantee that any conifer will suit a particular yard. Species differ in size, moisture preferences, and exposure needs (Oregon State University Extension Service, “Selecting, planting and caring for a new tree”).
Before planting, check the distance to buildings, fences, roads, and overhead lines, as well as available room for roots and canopy. A fast-growing tree may fill a view sooner, but speed alone does not make it a good fit: its eventual dimensions and site requirements still matter.
2. Specimen conifers
A single conifer can act as a focal point, adding a strong outline and foliage texture to a landscape. Choose one whose mature scale fits the space rather than relying on its size at purchase. Large trees need room clear of structures, overhead utilities, fences, and roads; evaluate mature size and site constraints before planting (Oregon State University Extension Service, “Selecting, planting and caring for a new tree”).

- Stunning leaf color throughout all seasons
- USDA zones 6-10
- Plant in sun to part shade
- Low maintenance
- Water twice per week until established, then water once per week
3. Hedging evergreens
Evergreens can form a shaped hedge or a less formal screen. Broadleaf evergreens are often used for dense, prunable hedges, while some narrowleaf evergreens work better as informal screening. The right choice depends on growth habit, local conditions, and how much pruning you are prepared to do; not every evergreen will respond well to the same shape or maintenance routine (Penn State Extension, “Evergreens for the Home Landscape”; Penn State Extension, “Evergreen Trees and Shrubs”).
4. Foundation shrubs
Smaller evergreen shrubs can frame an entrance or soften the edge where a building meets the landscape. Leave enough mature clearance for windows, walkways, and routine maintenance so the plants do not become cramped against the structure. Pennsylvania guidance gives yews and boxwoods as examples of foundation-planting choices; gardeners in other regions should confirm that a particular species and cultivar suit their climate (Penn State Extension, “Evergreen Trees and Shrubs”).
Rank #2
- VERSATILE PLANTING: Thrives in both full sun and partial shade conditions, making it adaptable to various garden locations
- COMPACT SIZE: Perfect dwarf evergreen shrub for small spaces, borders, and container gardens with its neat mounding growth habit
- YEAR-ROUND COLOR: Features striking dark purple foliage that maintains its rich color throughout all seasons
- SPRING BLOOMS: Produces beautiful dark pink string-like flowers in spring, adding vibrant seasonal interest to your landscape
- LOW MAINTENANCE: Drought-tolerant and naturally deer-resistant, requiring minimal care while providing maximum visual impact
5. Low evergreen groundcovers
A low-growing evergreen can keep a bed edge or slope covered with foliage through winter. Treat this as a site-specific role, not a recommendation for one universally suitable plant: the best groundcover depends on regional climate and on the bed’s light, soil moisture, and drainage. Check local extension guidance before selecting a species.
6. Broadleaf evergreen accents
Broadleaf evergreens provide a different look from conifers and can add foliage texture, flowers, or winter color. Penn State Extension lists pieris, mountain laurel, leucothoe, mahonia, and rhododendron as flowering broadleaf evergreen examples for Pennsylvania (Penn State Extension, “Evergreen Trees and Shrubs”). Their suitability is regional; confirm that the plant and cultivar fit your local climate and site.

How to choose an evergreen for your site
Compare candidates against the same practical criteria before buying. A plant that suits one role may be a poor match for another, and a name alone does not establish that it will thrive in your yard.
- Job and mature dimensions: Decide whether you need a screen, focal tree, hedge, foundation shrub, groundcover, or accent. Check expected mature height and width against the available space.
- Light and soil: Assess sun or shade, soil moisture, and drainage at the planting site.
- Exposure and climate: Consider drought, wind, and cold tolerance, along with local hardiness guidance. Recommendations and plant performance vary by region.
- Maintenance: Find out whether the plant needs pruning and whether its natural form suits the intended design.
- Nearby structures and utilities: Account for buildings, paths, overhead lines, and other obstacles when planning mature growth.
These checks matter because evergreen species vary in size, moisture preferences, and exposure needs. Oregon State’s guidance on screening trees and Penn State’s evergreen recommendations illustrate why there is no single best evergreen for every landscape (Oregon State University Extension Service; Penn State Extension).
Rank #4
- Thrives in USDA zones 5-9
- Grows to mature size 24-32 in. W x 24-32 in. H
- Full sun to partial shade
- Evergreen- year round interest
- Used in containers, landscapes, borders, hedges, and as accents
Winter color still needs care
Evergreens retain foliage through the year, adding color and structure when deciduous plants are bare (University of Minnesota Extension, “Evergreens in your landscape”). Winter conditions can still injure them: foliage may lose moisture when roots cannot replace it, leading to browning or branch damage. Penn State Extension notes that a plant’s hardiness-zone rating alone does not prevent winter desiccation (Penn State Extension, “Winter Desiccation of Evergreens”).

If your property is in a wildfire-prone setting, consider both plant choice and placement. Oregon State University Extension cautions that most evergreens have fire-prone characteristics and recommends managing their distance from structures and surrounding fuels, including accumulated needles. Its Pacific Northwest guidance identifies ponderosa pine and western larch as relatively more fire-resistant conifers; that comparison should not be treated as a general ranking for other regions (Oregon State University Extension, “Fire-resistant plants for landscapes”). Follow local wildfire and defensible-space guidance for your property.
