There is no universal top 40 for indoor plants: the right choice depends on the light, humidity, temperature and space you can offer. This curated list brings together distinctive foliage, trailing forms and flowers, with practical notes to help you find a plant that suits your home. “Low-light tolerant” means a plant can cope with less light—not that it can grow in darkness.

Start with the spot, not the plant

Before choosing a plant, note how far the spot is from a window and whether the light is direct, filtered or indirect. Also consider the room’s temperature and humidity. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) identifies light, humidity and temperature as important factors when selecting houseplants: its plant-selection guidance explains what to consider.

Light is often the deciding constraint. University of Missouri Extension puts it plainly: “Lack of adequate light is the most common factor limiting the growth of plants in many areas of the home.” A plant may survive in a dim spot yet grow slowly, become spindly or develop yellow foliage. If a location stays too dark, consider a different position or supplemental lighting rather than expecting a plant to thrive there. Missouri Extension discusses LEDs as one possible supplemental source, but does not endorse a particular model: Lighting Indoor Houseplants.

Plants to consider for lower-light spots

These plants are among Missouri Extension’s examples of houseplants that tolerate lower light to varying degrees. Their growth may still be stronger with suitable brighter light, and “tolerates” does not mean “prefers darkness.”

  • Cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior): A sturdy, upright foliage choice; Missouri Extension notes its tolerance of cool locations and poor light.
  • Pothos (Epipremnum aureum): A trailing vine that can spill from a shelf or climb with support. It is a useful option where light is limited, but still needs light to grow.
  • Snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata): An upright, architectural choice. Missouri Extension includes it among plants that tolerate low light.
  • Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum): A leafy plant with a cascading display form; it is also on Missouri Extension’s lower-light list.
  • Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema): A foliage option for a less-bright area. The genus includes different varieties, so check the individual plant’s light needs.
  • Peace lily (Spathiphyllum): It can adapt to lower light, but Missouri Extension says medium light is needed for flowering. Choose it for foliage in a dimmer spot, not on the assumption that it will bloom there.

Plants with distinctive foliage or compact forms

For a desk, side table or mixed display, these examples offer varied leaf shapes and patterns. Their care differs: check the specific plant’s light and moisture needs rather than applying one watering routine to all of them.

  • Aluminum plant (Pilea cadierei): Its patterned foliage brings visual contrast to a compact display.
  • Moon Valley pilea: A textured-leaf pilea for a close-up tabletop feature. Confirm the plant’s identity and care label when buying, since common names can vary.
  • Peperomias: A varied group of foliage plants suited to smaller displays. Missouri Extension cautions against overwatering peperomias.
  • Flame violet (Episcia cupreata): A foliage plant that can also flower; Missouri Extension includes it among indoor foliage and flowering options.
  • Begonias: A diverse group valued for foliage, flowers or both. Choose by the particular variety’s preferred light and humidity.

Trailing and climbing plants for shelves or supports

Use trailing plants to soften a shelf edge, or give climbing forms support where there is room to grow. These are display suggestions, not a shared care category: light and watering needs vary among species.

  • Ivy: A classic trailing form that can be trained over a support or allowed to cascade.
  • Grape ivy: Its climbing habit makes it a candidate for a trellis or other support.

Flowering plants for brighter indoor spots

Flowers often require brighter conditions than a dim interior provides. Missouri Extension’s examples include the following; match each plant to its own light needs rather than assuming that a flowering plant will bloom in any room.

  • African violet: A compact flowering choice for a suitable bright indoor position.
  • Begonias: Depending on the variety, begonias can contribute flowers as well as foliage.
  • Flame violet: A foliage plant that can produce flowers under appropriate conditions.
  • Gloxinia: A flowering option for a spot that meets its needs; consult the plant label for care guidance.
  • Peace lily: It may tolerate lower light as a foliage plant, but medium light is needed to flower, according to Missouri Extension.

Missouri Extension’s general guidance on houseplant care covers the fact that needs differ from plant to plant: Caring for Houseplants.

Small plants for terrariums

A terrarium is best suited to a subset of plants: generally small, slow-growing foliage plants that enjoy high humidity. The RHS advises placing terrariums in bright but indirect light. A closed or enclosed display is not a reason to ignore light or plant size; choose plants that fit the container and its conditions. See the RHS guidance on terrariums and bottle gardens.

How to make a plant work in your home

  • Observe the actual location. Record the window distance and whether the light is direct or filtered. A bright window ledge and a shelf across the room are not interchangeable.
  • Change light gradually. Missouri Extension warns that moving a plant abruptly into brighter light can damage foliage. Transition it over time rather than shifting it straight into stronger sun.
  • Match humidity and temperature. Some tropical houseplants need humid air and can struggle in drier conditions, as the RHS explains in its selection advice.
  • Follow species-specific watering guidance. Do not apply one schedule to every plant: Missouri Extension notes that maidenhair ferns should not be allowed to dry out, while peperomias should not be overwatered.
  • Use supplemental light only where it solves a real gap. If a spot remains too dim for the plant you want, add supplemental lighting or choose another location. Missouri Extension discusses LEDs as an option, but its guide is not a current product comparison.

Choose by what the room can offer

For a dimmer corner, start with the lower-light options and judge success by healthy growth, not just survival. For a shelf or vertical display, consider trailing or climbing forms. For flowers, prioritize an appropriate brighter spot. For a terrarium, select small, slow-growing foliage plants suited to high humidity and bright, indirect light. A plant that fits the conditions is more likely to look good over time than one chosen for appearance alone.
