How to Choose a Bandsaw Blade: Fit, Width, TPI and Tooth Style

Match bandsaw blade length and supported width to your saw, then choose blade width, TPI and tooth style for the material and cut.

Choose a bandsaw blade in this order: confirm the blade length and supported width for your saw, choose a width suited to the cut, then match tooth style and teeth per inch (TPI) to the material thickness and finish you want. No single blade is right for every job.

1. Confirm the blade fits your saw

Start with the bandsaw’s make and model. The blade must have the correct length, and its width and thickness must fall within the machine’s supported range. Check the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s blade finder rather than relying on a blade description that says only “fits most saws.” Olson Saw and Grizzly both provide machine-specific fit guidance: Olson’s blade selection guide and Grizzly’s bandsaw blade information.

Check the saw’s configuration, too. A riser block or other nonstandard setup can change the required blade length, so verify that the fit information applies to the machine as currently assembled. If a supplier listing and the manual disagree, follow the saw manufacturer’s specifications or confirm compatibility with the manufacturer.

2. Choose blade width for the cut

Blade width—the distance from the back of the blade to the tooth tips—affects how tightly the blade can turn and how well it tracks a straight line. A narrower blade can follow tighter curves. A wider blade is generally better suited to straight cuts and resawing, where a stable line through thicker stock matters. The saw must support the width you select; do not choose a blade that exceeds its specified capacity.

Woodcraft’s overview of bandsaw blade selection discusses width in relation to curve cutting and straight work. Use the blade maker’s width guidance for the radius you need, then confirm that width against your saw manual. A wider blade cannot make a tight curve simply because it is otherwise suitable for the material.

3. Match TPI to stock thickness and finish

TPI means teeth per inch. More teeth generally produce a finer, slower cut; fewer teeth tend to remove material faster but leave a rougher surface. The right pitch depends on the thickness and material of the workpiece as well as the finish and speed you want. If the teeth are too fine for the stock, chip clearance can become a problem; if they are too coarse, the cut may be rougher than desired.

Laguna Tools recommends using the number of teeth engaged in the cut as a guide: “It is normally recommended that you have 6 to 8 teeth engaged in the cut. This is not a rule, only a general guide.” See Laguna’s bandsaw blade education for its application guidance and examples. Treat that tooth-engagement range as a starting point, not a universal specification, and check the blade manufacturer’s chart for your material and stock thickness.

For example, Laguna compares 4 TPI and 14 TPI blades on 3/4-inch plywood: its example describes 4 TPI as faster and 14 TPI as slower with a smoother finish. That illustrates the speed-and-finish tradeoff, not a guarantee for every saw, blade, or plywood. Laguna also gives 2–3 TPI as an example for resawing wood and thicker stock up to 8 inches; verify both the blade and saw specifications before applying that recommendation.

4. Pick a tooth style for the job

Tooth shape changes how a blade cuts and clears chips. These are useful tendencies, not hard rules; the appropriate choice still depends on the blade design, material, and manufacturer’s application guidance.

  • Regular teeth: A general-purpose profile for a range of cuts.
  • Hook teeth: A larger gullet can help clear chips and support faster, coarser cutting.
  • Skip teeth: Wider spacing can help reduce clogging in suitable materials.

Woodcraft’s blade guide explains these tooth-style tendencies. Compare the blade maker’s stated uses with your intended cut instead of treating a tooth label as a complete selection rule.

5. Treat metal cutting as a separate application

Do not transfer a woodworking blade recommendation directly to metal. Metal blade selection depends on the material and on the size and shape of the section engaged by the teeth. Laguna gives 18–32 TPI as an example for thinner metals and plastics under 1/4 inch, but its example is not a substitute for an application-specific chart. Consult the blade supplier’s guidance for the material and section you are cutting.

New metal-cutting blades may also require a break-in procedure. Follow the blade manufacturer’s instructions for that procedure and for operating speed. ITM’s bandsaw blade selection guidance addresses metal-cutting selection and break-in considerations.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Identify the saw: Find the model and consult its manual or manufacturer blade finder.
  2. Verify fit: Confirm blade length, supported width and thickness, including any riser-block or nonstandard configuration.
  3. Define the cut: Decide whether the job is a tight curve, straight cut, resaw, or a cut in another material.
  4. Select width: Favor a narrower blade for tighter curves and a wider blade for straight cuts or resawing, within the saw’s limits.
  5. Match teeth to the work: Choose TPI and tooth style using stock thickness, material, desired finish, cutting speed, and the blade maker’s chart.
  6. Follow operating instructions: Use the saw and blade manufacturers’ current directions for installation, tension, speed, and any break-in procedure.

Before buying a replacement bandsaw blade, check its specifications against both your machine and the job. A blade suited to curve cutting may not be the best choice for resawing, and a woodworking blade recommendation does not establish suitability for metal.
