The right screw for a metal stud depends on what you are fastening. Joining steel framing to steel generally calls for a steel-to-steel framing screw selected for the combined steel thickness and connection; attaching drywall or sheathing calls for a board-attachment screw matched to the board and assembly. There is no one “best” screw for every metal-stud job.
First identify what the screw must join
Two common jobs are easy to confuse:
- Steel to steel: joining studs, tracks, or other framing components. Choose a framing fastener for the steel thickness, connection design, and required capacity.
- Board to steel: attaching drywall, sheathing, or another finish to a stud. Choose a screw intended for that board and steel-stud application, then install it to suit the finish.
A screw intended for attaching board is not automatically suitable for a structural or framing connection. Check the framing design, fastener instructions, and any applicable assembly or product requirements for the job.
How to choose a steel-to-steel framing screw
Match the point to the total steel thickness
Self-piercing screws pierce thinner sheet and form threads; self-drilling screws have a drill-like point that makes a hole before the threads engage. SFIA’s general selection guidance associates self-piercing screws with steel at or below 33 mil and self-drilling screws with greater thickness. Treat that as a selection aid, not a universal design rule. The relevant thickness is the steel the screw must penetrate, including multiple joined layers—not simply the stud’s gauge label. Where available, use the actual base-metal thickness and follow the fastener and framing manufacturer’s recommendations. Choose a head that suits the connection
Steel-to-steel connections commonly need a head with a bearing surface; hex and pan heads are examples. But the connector, finish clearance, or listed connection may require a specific head, so do not substitute based on appearance alone. Simpson Strong-Tie’s connector guidance, for example, specifies hex-head screws for its catalog connectors. That requirement applies to the relevant catalog connection, not to every metal-stud joint. Set length from the connection requirements
Screw length depends on the layers being joined, any gap, the steel thickness, and the required thread engagement or protrusion. For its E Metal Screw, Simpson Strong-Tie describes grip-length guidance that accounts for the joined material, steel thickness, air gap, and an allowance for three threads to protrude. Confirm the exact product limits and connection requirements rather than choosing length from stud depth alone. Simpson Strong-Tie’s E Metal Screw information is one manufacturer example.
Simpson Strong-Tie’s catalog connector guidance says that, in its catalog context, minimum screw length is the greater of 3/4 inch and the length needed to pass through the connection with three exposed threads. Do not apply that criterion to connections outside the catalog context; use the applicable connector documentation and design requirements.

How to choose a screw for drywall or sheathing
Board attachment is a separate application with its own fastener requirements. SFIA’s March 2018 technical note says gypsum-board attachment screws may meet ASTM C1513 or ASTM C1002. It also explains that a properly driven screw should be recessed enough for joint compound without breaking the board paper. The correct screw depends on the board, stud thickness, assembly, and manufacturer instructions; verify the current requirements for your project rather than treating the dated note as confirmation of the latest standard or local code adoption. Simpson Strong-Tie announced its Strong-Drive PPHD self-drilling pilot-point screw in #8 sizes for sheathing, drywall, or subfloor attachment to cold-formed steel framing. It is an example of a board or subfloor attachment fastener—not a general-purpose steel-to-steel framing screw. Check current product information and the assembly instructions before selecting it. Compare the choices that affect fit

Install the screw without binding or damaging the work
A self-drilling screw needs a point long enough to drill through the material before its threads engage. If the threads engage too soon, the screw may bind or break; the drill flutes also need room to clear chips. Applied force and motor speed affect drilling, so more pressure or higher speed is not automatically better. Follow the fastener manufacturer’s recommendations for the specific screw, steel thickness, and tool. Simpson Strong-Tie explains how self-drilling screws work.

Check the documents that govern your project
Fastener size, spacing, capacity, and installation details should come from the applicable framing design, connector or fastener documentation, and assembly requirements. Standards and code adoption can vary by jurisdiction and change over time. SFIA’s 2018 technical note identifies ASTM C1513 for steel-to-steel cold-formed steel framing connections and ASTM C1002 or C1513 for gypsum attachment to steel; confirm the current standard, adopted code, and product evaluation documents that apply where you are building.
SFIA’s AISI S230-26-C item is a 2026 public-review draft, not a final adopted code. It specifies self-drilling screws conforming to AISI S240 for cold-formed steel framing members and notes that point style can affect constructability. The draft says, “Because the point style of the screw may affect constructability, screw manufacturer recommendations should be consulted.” Use the draft as draft guidance only, not as proof of a current legal requirement.
