Start by identifying what the stain is on and checking that surface’s manufacturer instructions. Vinegar, citric acid, commercial limescale removers and even gentle abrasives can damage some faucet finishes or coated glass. Use only a compatible method, follow its directions, then rinse and dry the surface.
1. Check the surface and finish before cleaning
Hard-water deposits often respond to mild acids, but there is no universally safe cleaner for every faucet, showerhead or glass coating. Find the product’s care guidance before applying vinegar, citric acid, a commercial remover or an abrasive. If you cannot confirm compatibility, avoid experimenting with the finish.
For example, Delta recommends diluted vinegar for its faucet finishes, while GROHE says not to use household vinegar, acids or limescale removers on its fittings. Franke also distinguishes among chrome, stainless steel, PVD, colored and metallic surfaces, and warns against abrasives on vulnerable finishes. These directions are product- and finish-specific, not interchangeable.
2. Use diluted white vinegar only where permitted
For Delta faucet finishes, Delta advises a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water for hard-water stains, followed by a thorough rinse. This is Delta-specific advice; it should not be transferred to other brands or finishes. GROHE expressly prohibits vinegar and other acids on its fittings.

3. Choose a mild citric-acid cleaner when the maker recommends it
Hansgrohe recommends mild citric-acid-based cleaning for its faucets and shower products. Follow the product’s prescribed dosage and keep exposure to no more than ten minutes. Hansgrohe excludes hydrochloric, formic and acetic acids, chlorine bleaching lye and abrasive cleaning materials.

For hansgrohe showerheads, the company describes using a bowl, gloves and a mild citric-acid product. This is not a universal recipe: use the showerhead maker’s instructions, and do not transfer another cleaner’s dilution or contact time.
Pilkington’s US 2023 OptiShower table also recommends an 80/20 water-and-citric-acid solution for routine hard-water cleaning of that product. Check the glass manufacturer’s guidance and follow any coating-specific instructions.

4. Use a compatible commercial remover for stubborn deposits
CLR says its Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover is intended for household calcium and lime deposits on listed surfaces that include glass, chrome, fiberglass, porcelain and stainless steel. Its manufacturer still advises checking compatibility with the surface maker. For direct stain application, CLR specifies a maximum contact time of two minutes. Showerhead use has separate dilution, contact-time and rinsing instructions, so follow the current product label rather than borrowing directions from another use.
Do not exceed the label’s instructions or mix CLR with bleach or other household cleaners. Keep cleaning products separate and rinse as directed.

- Safe your & your Home!
- Surface Recommendation: Window, Tile, Shower, Stone, Door
5. Add only gentle mechanical help, then prevent buildup
For stubborn marks on Pilkington OptiShower glass, the manufacturer says a very soft abrasive cleaner may be used locally. That allowance applies to its specific glass guidance; it is not permission to use a scrub pad or abrasive on other surfaces. Delta and Franke warn against abrasives on faucet finishes.
After cleaning, rinse thoroughly and dry the surface. In hard-water conditions, Pilkington recommends rinsing shower glass and wiping or squeegeeing it dry. Franke recommends frequent faucet cleaning in hard-water areas. Removing water after use helps limit new deposits, although it does not replace cleaning when buildup has already formed.

Why one method cannot be used everywhere
Acid may loosen mineral deposits, but the same cleaner can be unsuitable for a particular coating or finish. Likewise, a product’s listed compatibility with one material does not automatically cover a treated glass panel, a differently plated faucet or every use of a showerhead. Match the cleaner to the exact product, respect its concentration and contact-time limits, and stop if the manufacturer’s guidance conflicts with a general cleaning suggestion.
