For clear windows, start with the window maker’s care instructions, remove loose dust before washing, and use clean lint-free materials. Work in sections small enough to clean before the solution dries, then remove the moisture promptly. On large outdoor panes, a squeegee can help—provided you can reach the glass safely.
Before you clean: check the window’s care instructions
Cleaning methods can vary by window product line. Pella recommends consulting the owner’s manual for detailed operation and care instructions, so check yours before choosing a cleaner or tool: Pella window care guidance.
What to gather
- Clean, lint-free microfiber cloths for routine cleaning and drying.
- A clean hand squeegee for larger panes you can safely reach.
- A compatible glass-cleaning solution, following both the window maker’s guidance and the cleaner’s label.
Pella recommends lint-free microfiber rather than paper towels for routine glass cleaning. If using a cleaner, apply it to the cloth instead of directly to the glass to help keep solution off frames. For larger or hard-to-reach outdoor windows, Pella recommends a squeegee; neither tool is a reason to lean out or use unsafe access. How to clean windows without streaks
- Clear the area. Move items away from the sill and ledge. Clear loose debris from tracks and ledges, and dust the frames.
- Remove dry dirt from the pane. Dust or otherwise lift loose particles off the glass before applying liquid. Dragging grit across the pane can scratch it, while washing over loose soil can spread it across the surface.
- Apply cleaner sparingly to a clean cloth. Follow the window-care instructions and product label. Use a fresh lint-free cloth rather than one already carrying dirt or residue.
- Clean a manageable section. Work from the top down in a zig-zag pattern, or use overlapping strokes. Keep the area small enough that the solution will not dry before you remove it. - Remove the moisture. Wipe with a clean, dry microfiber cloth, or use a clean squeegee. For a squeegee, start at the top and work downward, wiping the blade edge clean after each pass. Pilkington’s routine procedure likewise calls for a clean squeegee or lint-free towel: Pilkington glass cleaning and maintenance bulletin.
- Finish promptly. Buff any remaining solution with a dry, clean cloth before it dries unevenly.
Why streaks and water marks appear
Streaks can form when dirt and detergent are smeared back across glass instead of being lifted and removed. Pilkington explains that streaking can result when there is too much dirt and too little cleaning or rinsing solution. That makes the order of work important: remove loose soil first, use clean materials, and make sure there is enough appropriate solution for the remaining dirt.

Pilkington’s technical bulletin offers a specific instruction for its cleaning procedure: “To prevent streaking, stop wiping when the glass is almost dry and there is still a uniform, thin film of moisture left on the glass surface.” Follow the method appropriate to your window and cleaner; do not let solution dry in irregular patches.
Cloth or squeegee: which should you use?

These are practical differences, not a controlled performance comparison: the cited manufacturers do not establish that one method produces better results in every situation. For exterior glass, safe access matters more than tool choice.

Choose a cleaner carefully
Use the window maker’s compatibility guidance first, particularly if the glass has a coating or the window has special components. No single cleaner is established as best for every glass type or coating.
As one optional product example, Simple Green PRO Glass Cleaner’s published directions specify one part concentrate to 30 parts water for standard use. The manufacturer recommends cleaning cool glass, working before the solution dries, and drying with a clean lint-free cloth, microfiber, paper towel, or squeegee. Protect glass and window components
- Avoid metal contact with glass during routine cleaning; do not use razors or metal scrapers as everyday cleaning tools.
- Keep abrasive particles from becoming trapped between the glass and a cloth, pad, or squeegee.
- Keep cleaner off frames where possible by applying it to the cloth, and follow the window maker’s instructions for tracks, seals, and other components.
