ShopBot lists it from $12,548, before the final configuration is quoted. Whether it is worth that price depends less on the “pro” label than on whether your projects fit its travel, your shop can support its setup, and the included software and options match your workflow.
What the ShopBot Desktop MAX offers
ShopBot presents the Desktop MAX as a benchtop CNC router with a nominal 36 × 24 in bed, a 1 hp spindle, and operation from standard 120 V household power. Its product page names wood, MDF, plastics, foams, vinyl and aluminum as materials it can cut, drill or carve. These are the manufacturer’s stated capabilities, not a guarantee that every toolpath, bit or material thickness will suit every setup.
The June 2023 ShopBot specification sheet gives a 36 × 25 × 5 in work envelope. It also lists a machined aluminum frame assembled with bolted members, precision lead screws with anti-backlash technology, and fully supported precision linear guides and blocks. The sheet specifies 240 in/min cut speed, 360 in/min jogging speed and 0.00025 in resolution. These are manufacturer specifications; resolution is not measured accuracy, and the figures do not establish real-world cut quality or production throughput.
The product page’s “bed” dimension and the specification sheet’s “work envelope” are differently labeled measurements. Treat neither as proof of the usable travel available to your specific project: confirm actual X, Y and Z travel and clearance with ShopBot before ordering.

Price and what the historical review can tell you
ShopBot’s product page lists the Desktop MAX starting at $12,548 as accessed October 4, 2026, and directs prospective buyers to request a quote. It is a starting price, not a guaranteed checkout or delivered price; deck selection and other options can affect the configuration. Ask for a quote that itemizes the machine, selected deck, accessories and any other costs relevant to your purchase.
The Make review matching this article’s original title was published by Kurt Hamel on May 9, 2017. It listed a $9,340 base price and a $9,285 tested price that included a mini enclosure. Those figures describe that review’s 2017 pricing, not the current cost. Hamel concluded at the time: “If you can afford its $9,000+ price tag, the ShopBot Desktop MAX is a worthwhile upgrade from the smaller Desktop and Buddy 32 models without breaking into five figures.” That historical comparison should not be read as a current price judgment or a present-day comparison with other machines.

Will your projects fit?
The key purchase question is whether the part can be machined in one setup, not simply whether the stock can be placed on the bed. In the 2017 Make review, Hamel reported that a quarter sheet of plywood could be placed on the bed, but the machine cut only the first 36 inches in one setup; working through the full sheet required flipping it end-to-end and machining in two steps. That is a dated reviewer observation, not a current test of every configuration.
- Measure the finished part and required tool clearance, then compare them with confirmed usable X/Y/Z travel.
- Account for clamps, tabs, fixtures and tool approach; stock that physically rests on the bed may still not be machinable across its full length.
- If you plan to use indexing or flip setups for oversized stock, confirm the workflow and repeatability requirements with the seller rather than assuming the nominal bed dimensions settle the question.
Power, spindle, software and configuration
ShopBot describes a 1 hp spindle and standard 120 V operation; its June 2023 specification sheet specifies 120 V at 15 A. Check the circuit and electrical requirements at the intended installation location against the machine’s current documentation before purchase.

ShopBot identifies Vectric VCarve Pro as standard CAD/CAM software and lists ShopBot control software in its specification sheet. Confirm the current software license, supported computer requirements, included package and any recurring costs with the seller. A named software package is useful only if it supports your design-to-toolpath workflow and is compatible with the computer you plan to use.
The manufacturer lists two deck options: an aluminum T-slot deck and a universal vacuum hold-down deck. ShopBot’s documentation index includes resources for vacuum-table installation, material hold-down and edge clamps, but the available material does not establish independent comparative performance for the decks. Choose based on the shapes and materials you expect to secure, and clarify any required vacuum equipment or clamping accessories in the quote.

Setup, support and ownership considerations
ShopBot’s documentation index includes a Desktop MAX quick-start guide, handbook, user and programming references, power-tool safety material, material hold-down guidance, router-bit and collet instructions, vacuum-table setup, edge-clamp resources, enclosure information and setup videos. The presence of these resources is helpful, but it does not establish that setup will be easy for every buyer; consider the time and experience available in your shop.
ShopBot says free live phone support is for original owners, online resources are available to all, and paid support plans are available for second-hand machines. If buying used, verify support eligibility for that exact machine and purchase before committing.

Hamel’s 2017 review reported that the wasteboard could shift during shipping and advised centering it before running the manual’s surfacing and rabbet scripts. This is a dated observation from that review, not evidence of a universal or current defect. For a new machine, follow the supplied setup guidance and ask the seller what inspection or alignment steps apply to the delivered configuration.
How to decide whether it is worth the price
The Desktop MAX is most compelling when its compact format, stated work area, 120 V electrical requirement and included software align with the work you intend to do. Its listed starting price makes it important to compare complete, similarly configured quotes rather than judging on the base figure alone.
- Consider it if: your parts fit the confirmed travel, you need CNC routing across the listed material categories, and you value ShopBot’s documentation and the specified software package.
- Pause or compare alternatives if: your projects routinely exceed the usable travel, your process needs established production-rate or accuracy evidence, or the configured price stretches the budget.
- Before ordering: get confirmed travel dimensions, the complete optionized price, included software and computer requirements, deck and workholding details, electrical requirements, and warranty and support terms in writing.
ShopBot lists a two-year warranty in its June 2023 specification sheet. Confirm that the current terms for your configuration and purchase are the same when you request a quote.
