If your Ryobi generator won’t start, begin with the controls and fuel, then check oil and the spark plug. Ryobi manuals also identify fuel-system and storage problems as possible causes. The right steps depend on the exact generator model: find its model number on the product label and use that model’s manual before changing settings, draining fuel, or replacing parts. Ryobi says the model number is usually at the top left of the product label; see RYOBI support for manuals and parts.
Before troubleshooting: identify your model and stay safe
Ryobi generator controls, fuel-valve arrangements, oil-checking procedures, spark plugs, and safety features vary by model. The RYi1000 and RYi6522 manuals, for example, do not establish one procedure for every Ryobi generator. Look up the exact model’s operator manual and parts information before acting; do not assume a control position, oil specification, plug number, or plug gap applies to your unit.
If your generator has a carbon-monoxide (CO) sensor and its warning is active, stop ordinary troubleshooting and follow the warning in your own manual. For the RYi6522, the manual says a flashing red CO sensor LED means to leave the area immediately, move to an open outdoor area, and ventilate thoroughly before reoccupying. It also directs the user to keep the generator outdoors in an open area and point the exhaust away from occupied structures. Six common reasons a Ryobi generator won’t start
1. The switch or start control is in the wrong position
A switch left off or an incorrect choke/start setting can prevent starting. Check the starting sequence and control positions shown in your model’s manual. For example, the RYi1000 manual directs users to turn its On/Off switch on and place its choke lever in START. Other models may use different controls or positions.

2. The tank is empty or a fitted fuel valve is closed
Check that there is fuel in the tank. If your generator has a fuel valve, confirm its position using the manual; not every model necessarily has the same valve arrangement. Do not force a control or infer its position from another Ryobi generator.
3. The fuel is stale or contaminated with water
Ryobi troubleshooting instructions list stale gasoline and water in gasoline as possible causes of a no-start condition. The prescribed remedy in the reviewed manuals is to drain the fuel system and refill it with fresh fuel. Follow your model’s fuel and storage instructions rather than improvising fuel-system work.

4. Low oil has activated shutdown
On models equipped with Low Oil Shutoff, the engine may not start until the lubricant level is adequate. Check and top up the oil only as directed in your manual, which specifies the applicable oil and checking procedure. The feature, oil grade, capacity, and procedure should not be assumed to be identical across Ryobi models.
5. The spark plug is faulty, fouled, or incorrectly gapped
A bad or fouled plug, or an incorrect gap, is another cause listed in Ryobi troubleshooting material; replacing the plug is one listed remedy. Use the exact model’s manual or parts listing to confirm compatibility and the required gap before buying or installing a replacement. The reviewed information does not support one universal Ryobi generator plug number or gap. See the RYi1000 manual for a model-specific example.

6. A fuel-filter or storage-related fuel problem needs service
The RYi1000 troubleshooting table lists a dirty fuel filter and directs the owner to contact an authorized service center. It also identifies fuel left untreated or not drained before storage as a possible contributor to starting problems. Use the storage and service directions for your model; do not treat filter replacement or carburetor disassembly as a universal do-it-yourself fix.
