Harbor Freight’s Meme Tool: What It Is and Why It’s Selling Out

Harbor Freight’s “meme tool” is usually the ICON Locking Flex-Head Ratchet and Bit Set, 35-Piece (item 58074). The nickname grew out of online tool-community jokes and viral attention; it is not the product’s official name. Reports say trend-driven buying contributed to online sellouts, but there is no verified sales or inventory data showing how often it sells out or that it is unavailable everywhere.

What is Harbor Freight’s meme tool?

Harbor Freight’s product listing identifies the commonly meant item as the ICON Locking Flex-Head Ratchet and Bit Set, 35-Piece, item 58074. The compact set includes a ratchet, bits, an adapter and an extension. Harbor Freight lists a lifetime warranty subject to limitations; consult the official product page and its manual for current specifications and full warranty terms.

“Meme tool” is informal community shorthand rather than a Harbor Freight product category. Harbor Freight’s own search for the phrase returns this ICON set alongside other tools, so the wording is not unique to one item. Harbor Freight search results for “meme tool” show how the retailer uses the phrase in search, not as a formal product name.

Why did it become a meme?

In an August 31, 2024 report, SlashGear described the set’s online popularity as a meme built around its perceived usefulness, with some people buying it to join the trend. A community post from August 16, 2026, uses the phrase “meme tool saves the day” while describing a small-fastener job, an example of how owners talk about it rather than evidence of general performance. The post is anecdotal.

Gear Patrol’s April 9, 2026 coverage characterizes it as Harbor Freight’s original viral tool and points to its compact size and price as parts of its appeal. That is editorial context, not a measured sales result or a verified comparison with other ratchet sets.

Is it really selling out?

SlashGear reported online sellouts and attributed them in part to meme-driven demand. No audited sales figures, stock records or other named statistics establish the scale or frequency of those sellouts, or prove that social-media attention was the sole cause. “Selling out” should therefore be read as a report of online availability problems, not a claim that the tool is out of stock nationwide.

The official listing is live, but price and availability can change. Check the Harbor Freight product page and contact or check your local store for current stock.

What to consider if you’re buying a compact ratchet set

The meme explains the attention; it does not establish whether this set is the right choice for a particular job. For construction, repair or household work, compare the features that affect access and usefulness:

  • Head movement and locking: Check whether the head can angle into tight spaces and whether it locks in positions you will actually use.
  • Included bits and accessories: Verify the bit selection, adapter and extension against the fasteners and access needs you expect to encounter.
  • Size: A compact set may be easier to keep in a tool bag or use in confined spaces, but compactness alone does not establish suitability for every task.
  • Warranty and availability: Read the maker’s current warranty terms and confirm stock and price before making a trip or purchase.

Other compact drivers exist, but the available coverage does not establish a current, model-by-model comparison. Confirm a specific alternative’s head mechanism, included accessories, warranty and availability before treating it as equivalent.
