The most useful IKEA lighting ideas start with what you do in a room, not with a single statement fixture. Combine broad general light, focused task light and softer mood light; add integrated or smart lighting where it solves a specific need. The examples below are adaptable design directions, not a promise that one arrangement will transform every space. IKEA product ranges, fittings and smart features vary by market, so check local product details before buying.
Start with three lighting layers
IKEA’s lighting guidance distinguishes general lighting, task lighting and mood lighting. General lighting spreads light broadly, often from a ceiling fixture or pendant. Task lighting directs light to an activity such as reading, studying or cooking. Mood lighting—such as a shaded lamp, picture light or decorative string—softens contrast and changes the feel of a space. Integrated lights serve a more specific purpose, illuminating cabinets, wardrobes or displays. These layers can complement one another; one bright overhead light does not have to do every job.
1. Use a pendant or ceiling light for broad illumination
Begin with a fixture that spreads light through the room. Its role is general illumination, not necessarily the only light source. Consider how the fixture distributes light and whether its appearance suits the room.
2. Put a reading lamp beside a chair or sofa
Place focused light near the seat where someone reads or does another close-up activity. A dedicated reading light can make that spot useful without relying on the ceiling fixture alone.

3. Balance task light with a softer source
A focused lamp can feel stark when the rest of the room is dark. Add a lower-intensity ambient source nearby to soften the contrast between the lit task area and its surroundings.
4. Soften a hard-lit corner with a shaded table lamp
A shaded lamp is one way to bring a gentler pool of light to a side table or an otherwise dim corner. It can supplement general light when the room is being used more casually.
5. Bring light away from the ceiling with a floor lamp
A floor lamp creates another point of light at a different height. Consider one where overhead light leaves a seating area or corner less useful, and position it to suit the activity and circulation around it.
6. Add decorative string lights for a low-key layer
String lights can contribute a decorative glow rather than act as a substitute for focused work or reading light. Use them where their placement and appearance fit the room.

7. Use picture lighting to draw attention to art
A picture light can make a wall display a more deliberate part of the room. Treat it as an accent layer; it is not a replacement for broad room light.
8. Light shelves or display areas
Integrated lighting can make objects on shelves easier to see and can highlight a display. IKEA’s guides include cabinet and display lighting among the ways to layer light.
9. Illuminate a wardrobe or cabinet interior
Integrated lighting inside storage can help make contents easier to see. This is a practical choice for wardrobes or cabinets that are difficult to use under the room’s general light.
10. Give a desk its own focused light
A desk lamp directs light onto a work surface. Keep general room light in the mix so that the work area is not the only bright patch in an otherwise dark room.

Adapt the layers to the room’s activities
The same framework applies in different rooms, but the useful placement depends on what happens there. IKEA’s guides support adapting lighting by activity; they do not establish a universal layout that fits every home.
11. Make kitchen preparation a task-lighting priority
Think about the surface where food preparation happens and whether it needs more focused light than the room’s broad general source provides. The aim is to light the activity, not simply add another fixture.
12. Give bedroom routines more than one setting
Bedroom lighting may need to serve dressing as well as winding down. Combine useful light for getting ready with a softer source for more relaxed use, choosing controls that suit the routine.

A motion sensor is an option to consider where light is needed briefly in a passage or storage area. Check that the sensor works with the chosen lighting and follow the product’s setup instructions.
15. Consider a portable or rechargeable lamp when outlets constrain placement
A portable lamp can help when a cord or socket limits where a light can go. Check the current item’s runtime and battery requirements before relying on it for a particular routine.
16. Choose a fixture for both its appearance and its job
A decorative fixture contributes visually as well as providing light. Decide whether it is intended to illuminate broadly, serve a task or add atmosphere; appearance alone does not establish that it meets the room’s lighting needs.
17. Reassess the balance after deciding how the room is used
Start by identifying the room’s actual activities, then consider whether its general, task and mood layers are balanced. This keeps additions tied to a use rather than to a fixture count.

Use smart lighting only when its controls help
Depending on the bulb, controls and system, smart lighting may provide dimming, adjustable white tone or color, remote or app control, timers, groups or scenes. These capabilities are not universal across every bulb or setup. IKEA’s US smart-lighting category describes remote control or use of the IKEA Home smart app with DIRIGERA and gives KAJPLATS E26 bulbs as examples. 18. Choose dimming for a room with changing uses
If a room shifts between active and relaxed uses, dimming can let one compatible light source serve more than one setting. Check that the selected bulb, fixture and control method support dimming together.
19. Consider adjustable white tones for different routines
Some smart-lighting setups offer different white tones; others may not. If that adjustment matters to you, verify the feature on the specific bulb and confirm that the selected controls can operate it.
20. Use scenes or grouped lights for repeatable activities
A compatible system may allow lights to be grouped or set into scenes for activities such as dining or watching TV. Confirm which products and controls are needed before planning around that function.
