25 Types of Wrenches and How to Choose the Right One

Match a wrench to the fastener, working space and required control. This guide explains 25 wrench types and useful variants, including where they overlap.

Choose a wrench by first matching it to the fastener, then to the available space and the control the job requires. A snug-fitting box-end wrench is a better fit for many hex nuts than an open end; a flare-nut wrench is designed for tube fittings; and a torque wrench is the right choice when the instructions specify a torque value. You do not need all 25 styles: this guide counts useful formats and variants, which overlap rather than forming a universal, official classification.

How to choose a wrench

  1. Identify the fastener. Is it a hex nut or bolt, a round pipe, a tube fitting, or an internal hex socket? The tool must fit that shape.
  2. Match size and units. Select the correct SAE or metric size for the hardware. The fit should be snug; a loose wrench can slip and damage the fastener.
  3. Check access and swing room. Consider whether a full handle can move, whether the fitting is recessed, or whether the work is beneath a sink. A ratcheting, offset, stubby, basin or crowfoot style may suit restricted access.
  4. Choose the amount of contact and control. A box end surrounds more of a hex fastener than an open end. An adjustable wrench covers a range of sizes but must be set snugly. A torque wrench is needed when the equipment or fastener instructions call for a specified torque.

These distinctions—fastener profile, clearance, grip, adjustability, turning speed and torque control—are more useful than calling one wrench universally “best.”

25 wrench types and useful variants

The entries below include basic wrench families as well as access and drive variants. They are not mutually exclusive: for example, a combination wrench can have a ratcheting or flex head, and a crowfoot can have a flare-nut profile.

Fixed-size hand wrenches

  1. Open-end wrench. Its open jaws slide onto a hex fastener from the side, which helps when access is limited. It encloses less of the fastener than a box end, so fit matters. MSC’s wrench guide describes open-end and other common wrench forms.
  2. Box-end (ring) wrench. The closed ring fits over the fastener and engages its flats. It is a useful option when a more secure fit matters and there is room to get the ring over the fastener. MSC’s guide distinguishes box-end engagement from open-end access.
  3. Combination wrench. One end is open and the other is a box end, typically sized for the same fastener. The open end is quick to reposition; the box end offers more enclosing engagement. MSC describes the combination format.
  4. Offset box-end wrench. The ring sits at an angle to the handle to help clear nearby obstacles. Check the particular wrench’s design and product instructions; offset alone does not establish how much clearance or force it is suitable for.
  5. Ratcheting box-end wrench. A ratcheting ring turns the fastener on the working stroke without requiring the wrench to be lifted and reset after each turn. This can help where the handle’s swing is restricted. MSC includes ratcheting wrenches in its guide.
  6. Ratcheting combination wrench. This combines an open end with a ratcheting box end. It is a combination-wrench variant, not a separate basic jaw family.
  7. Flex-head ratcheting wrench. Its pivoting head lets the user change the approach angle, which can help around obstructions. Treat it as an access feature and follow the tool maker’s instructions for use.
  8. Stubby wrench. A short handle fits into places where a longer one cannot swing. The trade-off is reduced reach and leverage compared with a longer wrench.
  9. Long-pattern wrench. A longer handle can provide reach and leverage. Use the tool within its stated limits; do not add an improvised extension.
  10. Flare-nut (line) wrench. Its partially enclosed head fits around a tube or pipe fitting while leaving an opening for the line. It engages more of the nut than a plain open end. MSC identifies flare-nut ends for pipe and tube fittings.
  11. Double-ended wrench. It has two fixed openings, commonly in different sizes. Unlike a combination wrench, both ends need not be an open-end and box-end pair.
  12. Engineer’s wrench. A large open-ended wrench for large fasteners and heavy industrial settings, as described in MSC’s wrench guide. Confirm the correct size and intended use for the specific job.

Adjustable and plumbing wrenches

  1. Adjustable wrench. A movable jaw lets one tool accommodate a range of fastener sizes. Adjust it snugly before turning. STANLEY’s current US adjustable-wrench category lists 6-, 8-, 10- and 12-inch product examples; those are listed sizes, not a measure of which sizes are most common. See STANLEY’s adjustable-wrench category.
  2. Pipe wrench. Adjustable, toothed jaws grip round pipe. Its job is different from fitting a conventional hex nut. OSHA recognizes pipe wrenches in its construction hand-tool regulation and construction terms glossary.
  3. Basin wrench. This plumbing tool is shaped for reaching fittings in the confined space beneath a sink. Check the specific tool’s instructions and intended fittings before use.
  4. Strap wrench. A strap wraps around a smooth cylindrical object and grips it without toothed jaws bearing directly on the surface. Whether it is appropriate for a particular object or amount of force depends on the product; consult its instructions.
  5. Spud wrench. A plumbing and pipefitting specialty tool with an open jaw and, on many designs, a pointed end used to help align holes. OSHA includes “spud wrench” in its construction terms glossary.

Socket, torque and powered tools

  1. Socket wrench and ratchet. A separate socket fits over the fastener and attaches to a drive handle. Swapping sockets lets the same handle work with different compatible sizes. OSHA recognizes “socket wrench” in its construction terms glossary.
  2. Torque wrench. Use a suitable torque wrench when the job instructions specify a target torque. Follow the fastener or equipment maker’s instructions for the value and procedure; an ordinary adjustable wrench does not measure torque.
  3. Crowfoot wrench. This is a wrench head without a full handle, made to attach to a ratchet or torque-wrench drive. It can reach a fastener where a full-handled wrench cannot. If used with a torque wrench, follow the tool maker’s instructions for that setup. MSC describes crowfeet as useful for hard-to-reach areas.
  4. Impact wrench. A powered wrench category, distinct from manual wrenches. OSHA recognizes the name in its construction terms glossary. Follow the tool, fastener and equipment instructions for its use.
  5. Breaker bar. This is technically a non-ratcheting socket-driving handle, rather than a wrench head. It accepts a compatible socket and provides a drive handle for turning a fastener.
  6. Flex-head socket wrench. An articulated socket handle changes the approach angle to help work around obstructions. Its purpose is access; check the tool’s instructions for intended use.

Specialty fastener and fitting tools

  1. Hex key (Allen wrench). An L-shaped or T-handle tool fits an internal hex socket. “Allen wrench” is a familiar name, although a hex key may not be classed as a wrench in every taxonomy.
  2. Crowfoot flare-nut wrench. This combines a flare-nut profile with a drive attachment, allowing a tube fitting to be reached in tight quarters. It overlaps both crowfoot and flare-nut categories, illustrating why the 25 entries are a practical organizing list rather than an official count. MSC discusses both crowfoot and flare-nut uses.

When the job calls for a specified torque

Use a suitable torque wrench when assembly instructions give a torque value; do not substitute an adjustable wrench for the measuring tool. An OSHA incident record concerning an event on July 26, 2006, states that coupling instructions specified a minimum of 250 and maximum of 300 lbs of torque. Investigators concluded that the assembly likely was not tightened to the specified torque because an adjustable wrench was used instead of a torque wrench. The record is a case-specific incident, not evidence of how often such failures occur, and it states the unit only as “lbs.” See OSHA incident record 310384839.

Inspect the wrench and use it safely

For US construction work, OSHA’s hand-tool rule at 29 CFR 1926.301(b) says: “Wrenches, including adjustable, pipe, end, and socket wrenches shall not be used when jaws are sprung to the point that slippage occurs.” This is a construction regulation, not a claim that every adjustable wrench is unsafe. A tool with damaged jaws that slip should not be used for the work. Read the OSHA regulation for its scope and wording.
