If your washer is overflowing, stop the cycle and close both the hot- and cold-water supply taps. Then identify where and when the water appears: a tub that keeps filling, a drain that spills during pumping, and a leaking hose point to different problems. If water is near electrical equipment, keep clear and get qualified help rather than touching plugs, cords, or controls.
First, stop the overflow safely
- Stop the washer cycle if you can do so without approaching wet electrical equipment.
- Close both the hot- and cold-water taps supplying the washer.
- Keep away from wet plugs, cords, outlets, and controls. If electrical equipment is wet or there is any immediate danger, do not handle it; contact qualified assistance.
- Once the situation is safe, note whether water came from the tub, the drain standpipe, or a hose or connection, and whether it appeared during filling or draining.
There is no single emergency procedure that fits every washer and home. Prioritize avoiding electrical hazards and stopping the water supply; use the appliance manual or qualified service for model-specific next steps.
Use the symptom to narrow down the cause
| What you observe | Likely direction to investigate | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Water continues entering the tub after washer power is off | A faulty water inlet valve is a strong suspect. | Keep the supply taps closed and arrange model-specific diagnosis and repair. |
| The washer overfills only while powered | A water-level sensing problem, such as a pressure-switch or pressure-tube issue, may be involved. | Do not assume the inlet valve is the cause; have the sensing system checked. |
| Water spills at the drain while the washer pumps out | The drain hose may be displaced or the household drain may be restricted; gravity flow can also be a factor. | Check the hose position and look for signs of household drain backup. |
| A puddle forms around a tap, hose, or washer body | A supply hose or connection leak, or excess detergent suds on some front-loaders, may be responsible. | Inspect accessible hose connections and check detergent type and dosage. |
These clues help prioritize checks, but they do not establish the fault in a particular washer. Make, model, installation, and the exact point of leakage matter.
If the washer keeps filling after power is switched off
With the water taps closed, continued filling after washer power is switched off points strongly to a failed inlet valve. Frigidaire Appliance Parts describes this as a diagnostic observation and advises identifying the replacement by the washer’s exact model number: Frigidaire’s washer overfilling guide.

Do not buy a generic valve based only on appearance. The replacement must match the full model number and the appliance’s specifications. Confirm the diagnosis before purchasing a part; a valve replacement is model-specific work.
If it overfills only while powered
If filling stops when power is off, a water-level control problem remains possible. Frigidaire explains that the pressure switch cuts power to the inlet valve when the target level is reached, and recommends checking the pressure tube for blockage or leakage before concluding the switch needs replacement. Bosch also lists pressure-switch and pressure-chamber faults among possible overfill causes.

These are internal components, and the correct checks and repair depend on the model. Bosch recommends a trained or authorized engineer for the faults described in its washing-machine leak and overfill guidance. Avoid opening the washer or attempting electrical repairs without model-specific service instructions and appropriate qualifications.
If water spills from the drain during pumping
A spill at the standpipe while the washer drains is different from a tub that fills past its limit. LG identifies a displaced drain hose and a clogged drain as possible causes. Check whether the hose has slipped out or is installed incorrectly, and whether the household drain is backing up: LG’s water-leak troubleshooting guidance.

Whirlpool says a drain below 39 inches (99 cm) can allow water to flow out by gravity. That figure is Whirlpool troubleshooting guidance, not a universal washer installation specification. Check the installation instructions for your exact model before changing hose height or routing: Whirlpool’s drain-hose installation guidance.
If there is a puddle around a hose or connection
When the area around a tap or hose is wet, inspect only the visible, accessible hot- and cold-water supply hoses and their connections for obvious damage or leakage. Frigidaire’s water-supply guide recommends checking water flow, hose connections, and inlet filters. It gives a supply-pressure range of 30–120 psi for the washer types covered by that guide; this is not a universal requirement for every washer. Consult your own model’s manual and the relevant Frigidaire Laundry Water Supply Guide.

- Simple Flat Installation for Household Washers Lay your washing machine drain pan on flat ground, then put the washer on top. Keep the pan horizontal to get better water collection effect.
Close the supply taps before disconnecting any hose. Follow the washer manual for disconnection, installation, and reconnection; if the leak source is unclear or a connection cannot be safely secured, contact qualified help.
Replace a supply hose only when it is damaged or unsuitable for the washer. Whirlpool cautions that flood-safety devices can interfere with washer performance and recommends checking compatibility rather than treating a flood-safe hose as a universal fix: Whirlpool’s flood-safe hose guidance.

If suds or detergent may be causing the leak
On front-load washers, too much detergent can create excess suds and contribute to leakage, according to LG. Use the detergent type required by your washer—such as HE detergent where specified—and follow the washer and detergent dosage directions. A puddle alone does not prove that the tub is overfilling: LG’s water-leak troubleshooting guidance.
Know when to call for repair
Safe initial checks are limited to observing when and where water appears, checking whether filling continues after power is off, and looking for visible damage to accessible external hoses. Shut off the water supply before disconnecting hoses, and use the exact model manual for installation details.
Internal inlet-valve, pressure-switch, and pressure-chamber diagnosis or replacement is model-specific. Bosch recommends trained or authorized service for the internal faults covered by its guidance. If the washer continues to fill, overfills while powered, or the source of the leak is uncertain, keep the taps closed and arrange qualified appliance repair rather than attempting a generic internal repair.
