Which fabric glue should you use on denim?
Choose based on the patch and the feel you want. Aleene’s specifically recommends its Permanent Fabric Glue for patches with textile backings. The company says its Fabric Fusion adhesive also works for denim repair, but may leave the material with a stiffer hand. These are manufacturer recommendations, not an independent comparison of bond strength or long-term wear.
For either product, test an inconspicuous area first. Check whether the glue shows through and whether the treated denim feels acceptable once dry. A test is especially useful before working on a visible area or a pair you wear often.
How to apply Aleene’s Fabric Fusion to a denim patch
- Prewash the jeans. Aleene’s product directions say to wash the garment without fabric softener, then let it dry before applying adhesive.
- Test first. Try the glue on a hidden area to assess the appearance and feel.
- Apply an even coat. Spread the adhesive over the patch or fabric as directed on the product page and package.
- Press and secure. Press the patch onto the denim. Use tape or pins to hold it in place while the adhesive sets if needed.
- Allow time before washing. The product page says to allow 2–4 hours to fully cure and says the adhesive is washable after 48 hours. Follow the current package directions if they differ.
- Wash gently. Aleene’s recommends turning the garment inside out, using a gentle cycle, and drying at low temperature. Wet Fabric Fusion can be cleaned with water.
When can you wash jeans repaired with fabric glue?
Use the laundering time given for the specific adhesive. Aleene’s Fabric Fusion product page says it is washable after 48 hours. Separately, Aleene’s FAQ gives a general recommendation to wait at least 72 hours before laundering fabric-glued items. Because the product page gives formula-specific directions while the FAQ offers broader guidance, check the label for the glue you have rather than treating either interval as universal. Aleene’s Fabric Fusion product directions and the Aleene’s FAQ provide those respective timings.

Will fabric glue work for every rip or seam?
Glue is an option for appropriate patch repairs, but the manufacturer guidance available here does not establish that glue alone will hold up in every location or for every type of wear. In particular, there is no established performance result for high-stress crotch, inner-thigh, or seam damage. For a repair that must withstand repeated strain, consider sewn reinforcement or a professional repair rather than assuming an adhesive patch will be sufficient.
What about other denim adhesives?
Tear Mender’s official application guide references torn jeans and patch repair, so it is a possible alternative to investigate. The available guide information does not establish enough about its denim-specific process, care directions, or comparative durability to call it a better choice or rank it against Aleene’s products. Review the current instructions for any adhesive you consider.

Do not assume a fabric glue is dry-clean safe. Aleene’s says that only Insta-Fuse Fabric Fusion in its product line is dry cleanable; it warns that dry-cleaning chemicals may weaken or dissolve most other glues. Its FAQ also distinguishes water-based and solvent-based products and advises testing. Check the exact product label and the cleaner’s guidance before sending a glued garment for dry cleaning.
