When did Michelle Obama plant the White House Kitchen Garden?
The project began with two milestones in spring 2009. Michelle Obama and local schoolchildren broke ground on March 20, and students joined the first planting on April 9. The archived Let’s Move! garden guide describes it as the first major vegetable garden at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt’s World War II Victory Garden.
What was the garden for?
The garden was intended to start a national conversation about health and wellbeing. The archived White House account says that conversation developed into Let’s Move!, the initiative launched in 2010 to encourage healthier lives for children. The sources document that purpose and connection; they do not establish measurable health outcomes caused by the garden.
It also had practical uses. Produce went to the First Family and White House events, including State Dinners, and some was donated to Miriam’s Kitchen. Students from across the country took part in planting and harvest, making the garden a hands-on educational setting as well as a food source.

The additions made the garden a more usable place for gathering and learning. The 2016 announcement said the Burpee Foundation and W. Atlee Burpee Company supported preservation through the National Park Foundation. That records historical support, not who maintains the garden now.
Why did the garden matter beyond the White House?
The garden linked a visible place at the White House to a wider public discussion about what people eat and how children learn about food. At the October 2016 dedication, Michelle Obama described it as a symbol of change and aspiration: “This garden represents the transformational change we’ve seen in just the past six and a half years, as well as our collective hopes for growing a healthier nation for our children.” The archived White House announcement records the remark.

At a 2016 planting event, she also recalled the original idea as a way to create “a space for us to talk about the food we eat.” The remark is quoted in a Let’s Move! account by Catherine Oakar. The same event was planned as the eighth consecutive year of spring planting during her tenure: it was scheduled for April 5, 2016, according to the Office of the First Lady announcement dated April 1, 2016.
