The right motion-sensor light for stairs depends on the installation: battery-powered lights are a straightforward retrofit, hardwired step lights suit permanent installations, and commercial stairwell luminaires or emergency equipment serve different building needs. The examples below illustrate those options, but they are not a tested or ranked list of “best” products.
Choose the type of stair lighting that fits your installation
Battery-powered lights for a retrofit
Surface-mounted battery lights can be installed without wiring. LEDVANCE’s NIGHTLUX Stair has an integrated motion sensor, downward light emission to illuminate the floor, Auto or On/Off mode, and mounting accessories for adhesive tape or screws. It has an IP54 rating and comes with three AAA batteries, according to the manufacturer. LEDVANCE says the NIGHTLUX Stair is “not designed as a replacement for conventional lighting in private household.” LEDVANCE product details
HOKOLITE’s 0065 is another indoor, battery-powered example. The maker lists three AAA batteries, which are not included, a 10 ft motion distance, a 120° detection angle and an automatic shutoff after 20–25 seconds. Its stated package includes six lights, six adhesive pads, screws and a manual. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. HOKOLITE 0065 specifications
For a cordless retrofit, check how batteries are replaced, whether the mounting surface suits adhesive or screws, where the light points, and how the sensor behaves in daylight or when the stairs are already lit. Battery lights require ongoing battery maintenance.

Hardwired step lights for a permanent installation
Hardwired fixtures require a suitable electrical connection and are a different choice from stick-on battery lights. FC Lighting lists its FCSL1016 as a 120 VAC, junction-box-mounted step light with an integrated passive-infrared (PIR) motion sensor and photocell. The manufacturer specifies 80 lumens and IP65 protection and lists stairways among its applications. FC Lighting FCSL1016 specifications
Lotus LED Lights also lists horizontal and vertical step-light models with integrated motion sensors and photocells, with stairways among the intended applications. Check the specific model’s orientation, junction-box fit, light output, color and environmental rating rather than assuming all versions share the same specifications. Because these fixtures connect to building wiring, confirm the required junction box and installation details with a qualified electrician before purchase or installation.
Commercial stairwell luminaires and controls
A commercial stairwell fixture is not simply a larger consumer night-light. Portor describes its PT-STL as a 4-foot luminaire with selectable color temperature (CCT) and wattage. Its occupancy-control behavior is also distinct from a basic light that turns off: motion brings the fixture to full output, after which it dims to a selected level and remains there until motion triggers it again. LED strip and controller systems
Motionstep describes a controller for 12V or 24V LED strips using microwave sensors, with Bluetooth app configuration and stair or pathway lighting effects. This is a system involving a controller, sensors and compatible strips—not a self-contained stair light. Its installation guidance says controller installation should be done by someone with electrical skills, preferably a certified specialist, with the power off. Motionstep system information

Keep convenience lighting separate from required lighting
A motion-activated light added for convenience is not automatically a replacement for a home’s normal lighting or for emergency illumination. LEDVANCE makes this distinction specifically for the NIGHTLUX Stair. For buildings that may require emergency stair lighting, Lamar LED’s brochure discusses UL 924-listed emergency equipment and inspection and testing practices in a life-safety-code context. It is an industry manufacturer’s explanatory material, not a determination of requirements for a particular property. Check the currently adopted code with the local authority having jurisdiction and consult qualified professionals for required emergency systems or commercial buildings.
