Which Wire Is Live: Black or White? A U.S. Home Wiring Guide

Black is usually hot and white neutral in typical U.S. residential wiring, but wire color is not a safety test. Learn the conductor roles and when to call an electrician.

In typical U.S. residential wiring, black is usually the hot (live) wire and white is usually neutral. That is a common color convention—not a way to prove a wire is safe, de-energized, or correctly connected. Never touch or work on a conductor based on its color alone.

What black and white wires usually mean

In an ordinary U.S. home branch circuit, the black conductor is commonly the hot, or ungrounded, conductor. It carries current from the electrical panel to a light, appliance, or other load. The white conductor is commonly the neutral, or grounded, conductor, which provides the circuit’s return path. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) explains these typical circuit roles in its home electrical safety guidance.

“Grounded” in the term grounded conductor does not mean that neutral and the equipment grounding wire are interchangeable. Neutral is part of the normal circuit path; equipment grounding is a separate protective conductor. Green or bare wire is commonly used for equipment grounding in U.S. residential wiring.

How the three common conductor roles differ

Conductor Common U.S. identification Usual role
Hot (ungrounded) Black Carries current from the panel to the load.
Neutral (grounded) White Provides the normal return path for current.
Equipment grounding Green or bare Provides a separate protective path; it is not the neutral conductor.

These are common residential conventions, not a guarantee about any particular wire. NEC-related educational material describes white or gray identification for grounded conductors under the particular code provisions it reproduces; applicable requirements depend on the adopted code and jurisdiction. See the grounded-conductor identification discussion for that code context.

Why color cannot tell you whether a wire is safe

A familiar insulation color does not prove that a conductor is connected correctly or is not energized. Existing wiring may have been altered, mislabeled, or installed in a configuration that the simple black-hot, white-neutral example does not cover. Wiring conventions also vary by country and installation. The guidance here is specific to typical U.S. residential wiring, not a universal rule.

OSHA’s construction electrical standard requires grounded and equipment grounding conductors to be identifiable and distinguishable, and states: “No grounded conductor shall be attached to any terminal or lead so as to reverse designated polarity.” That requirement does not establish that every existing installation complies. Read OSHA 1926.404.

When to call an electrician

Have exposed, damaged, or confusing wiring assessed by a licensed electrician. ESFI also recommends electrical inspections for homes at least 40 years old; homes at least 10 years old that have had a major renovation, addition, or major new appliance; and people buying a previously owned home. Its warning signs include frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, arcs or sparks, unusual sizzling or buzzing, overheated or discolored covers, shocks, and damaged insulation. If you notice these conditions, contact a licensed electrician rather than trying to identify or repair wiring by color.

KAIWEETS Voltage Tester/Non-Contact Voltage Tester with Signal Percentage, Dual Range AC 12V/70V-1000V, Live/Null Wire Tester, Electrical Tester with LCD Display, Buzzer Alarm, Wire Breakpoint Finder
  • SAFETY FIRST: It will send out multiple alarms through sound and light. When the voltage is detected, the tip will send out red light and beep. When the higher the sensed voltage is, or the closer it is to the voltage source, it beeps at a higher frequency and the percentage value will be larger. At the same time, the screen will be red or green, red means high voltage and live wire are detected, green means low voltage and null wire are detected
  • NON-CONTACT: With NCV inductive probe for AC voltage; Just place the tip near a terminal strip, outlet, or supply cord. When the tip glows red and the pen beeps, you know there's voltage present. The live wire detector can automatically detect the live or neutral wire. Ideal for breakpoint Test. Handy circuit tester for electricians, homeowners
