Better Homes & Gardens named Bryt its best overall laundry detergent sheet, based on a test of six popular brands. Its other picks suit different priorities: ECOS for a fragrance-free formula, Grove Co. for scent, and Earth Breeze for packaging and formula claims. These are editorial test categories, not universal rankings—and the sheets often faded stains without fully removing them.
How the testing was done—and what it can tell you
In an article updated January 12, 2026, Better Homes & Gardens (BHG) says it tested six popular detergent-sheet brands in a normal laundry cycle. Test fabrics included cotton and athletic T-shirts, terry-cloth and bath towels, and linen napkins. Testers inspected the washed textiles for stain removal, fading, scent, cleanliness, and feel, including whether fabrics felt stiff or pliable.
BHG does not report lab measurements, numerical scores, or detailed controls such as water temperature, washer model, or repeat-wash count. Treat the results as a qualitative comparison of those tested loads, not a controlled performance ranking for every machine, stain, or water condition. Which detergent sheet should you choose?
Choose Bryt for the strongest all-around showing in this test
BHG’s overall pick combined soft-feeling laundry, no observed residue, a moderate fresh scent, and some success on foundation and chocolate stains. The article lists one sheet per load. Red wine and spaghetti sauce remained somewhat visible, so pretreat heavy stains rather than relying on a sheet alone.
Choose ECOS if avoiding added fragrance is your priority
BHG describes ECOS as fragrance-free and says its formula is made without dyes, optical brighteners, parabens, or phosphates. That makes it a plausible option to compare if fragrance is a concern, but the test does not establish that it is medically hypoallergenic or suitable for every sensitive-skin user. It also had the weakest stain-removal result among these four descriptions: none of the tested items was fully stain-free after one wash.
Choose Grove Co. if you want a scented option
BHG favored Grove Co.’s lavender-and-thyme scent and reported soft fabrics without lingering residue. The brand also offers a Free & Clear fragrance-free option, according to the article. The scented version was the most expensive of these four by BHG’s article-era per-load estimates, and only the chocolate stain was mostly removed in the test.

Choose Earth Breeze if its packaging and ingredient claims matter to you
BHG says the package has no interior plastic wrappers and describes the formula as made without optical brighteners, artificial dyes, parabens, phthalates, or preservatives. The article lists scented and fragrance-free versions. Its “most sustainable” label is BHG’s editorial category—not the result of a life-cycle analysis or quantified environmental comparison. Compact, lightweight sheets may also be convenient where storage is limited or for travel, but the test did not measure environmental impact.
What to expect on stains, scent, and sensitive skin
Stain results vary; pretreat stubborn marks
Across the four picks, BHG reported a mix of stain fading and incomplete removal. Bryt showed some improvement on foundation and chocolate but left red wine and spaghetti sauce visible; Grove Co. mostly removed chocolate but not all other stains; Earth Breeze lightened some marks but struggled with oil, grass, and makeup; and ECOS did not fully remove stains from any tested item. If an item is heavily stained, pretreat it and follow the garment-care label instead of assuming a detergent sheet will remove the mark in one wash.
Fragrance-free is a useful preference, not a medical guarantee
BHG quotes laundry expert Ashley Kidder, founder and CEO of Dashing Maids and Mountains of Laundry, advising people with sensitive skin to consider fragrance-free sheets. Kidder says “synthetic fragrance is a known irritant.” That is her advice in the article, not proof that any particular sheet prevents irritation; ingredient preferences and skin responses vary. Compare the package’s current ingredient and fragrance information, and seek medical advice for persistent reactions.

Can you use detergent sheets for hand-washing?
BHG relays Kidder’s advice that hand-washing can work if the sheet dissolves fully: tear off a small piece, dissolve it completely in warm water, then add the clothes. This is expert guidance reported by BHG, not a universal guarantee for every product. Follow the specific package directions and care label.
Are laundry detergent sheets worth choosing?
Sheets can be an easy-to-store, lightweight alternative to bulky detergent containers. Kidder describes them as convenient for apartment living or for people who do not want to carry large jugs home. Their main trade-off in BHG’s test was inconsistent stain removal: choose among these four according to fragrance, scent, packaging claims, and observed fabric feel, and plan on pretreating tougher stains. Use cost per load—not package price alone—when comparing options, while remembering that BHG’s figures are from its January 2026 update rather than verified current prices.
