Start by finding the exact model number on your Bissell carpet cleaner; it is often on a white label on the lower back or bottom, or behind the tanks. Designs and safe repair steps vary, so use the matching Bissell support page before ordering parts or opening the machine. For basic checks, turn the cleaner off and unplug it before removing tanks, filters, or brush components.
Why is my Bissell carpet cleaner brush not spinning?
Check the operating position first
On some models, the brush roll turns only when the handle is reclined. Bissell’s ProHeat Essential guidance says the brushes will not turn while the machine is upright; instructions for certain ProHeat, PowerSteamer, and PowerLifter models also direct brush checks with the handle reclined. Set the machine in the position specified for your model before assuming a part has failed. Bissell support
Inspect only user-serviceable parts
If the brush still does not turn, follow the brush troubleshooting for your exact model. Unplug the cleaner before removing or cleaning components, and do not open electrical or motor assemblies based on generic instructions. A belt is a possible cause on some models, but belt designs and service steps are not universal. Replace one only if the model guide identifies it and inspection confirms it is worn, damaged, or missing.
Why is my Bissell carpet cleaner not spraying?
Check the tanks and setup
Confirm that the cleaner is set up for floor cleaning, the clean-water and formula tanks contain what the model requires, and each tank is seated correctly. A tank that is not fitted properly, or a displaced seal, can interfere with operation. Follow the instructions for your model rather than assuming all Bissell tanks and formulas are interchangeable.

Clean the solution filter if your model has one
For the 1370, 1622, 1623, 1846, 1899, and 25A3 models, Bissell’s troubleshooting directs users to unplug the unit, remove the red solution-filter cap, rinse the white filter under cold water, and reinstall it. Check that the tank’s red gasket has not shifted. Do this only if your model’s instructions call for that filter and procedure. Bissell support
Check for a damaged belt or clogged floor spray tips
For certain ProHeat ClearView, Pro-Tech, and PowerSteamer Pro models, Bissell identifies the brush/pump belt as a possible cause of no spray because that belt operates both the brush roll and pump. Inspect it only as described in the model guide; do not assume a belt for another Bissell fits. Bissell support

If your model sprays from the tank or another outlet but not onto the floor, clogged spray tips may be the cause. Bissell’s cited procedure starts by unplugging the cleaner, laying the handle flat, turning it over, and cleaning the two tips under the brush roll with a small brush. Follow the matching instructions, keep fingers away from moving parts, and do not turn over a plugged-in machine. Bissell support
Why does my Bissell have no suction?
Use the suction troubleshooting for the specific model and configuration. For the ProHeat Essential, Bissell says to select floor-cleaning mode and clean the filter. A Bissell video description for a portable cleaner specifies Bissell 2X Portable Machine formula for that portable machine; this does not establish a formula requirement for every Bissell carpet cleaner. If the problem concerns a hose or tool rather than floor pickup, match the symptom to the model’s instructions. In the cited Bissell guidance, if the wand sprays without the tool attached, the tool spray tip may need cleaning with a brush and paper clip. Do not apply that procedure to a different symptom or model without checking its instructions.
Why is my carpet cleaner leaking?
Start with visible, non-invasive checks. For the ProHeat Essential family, Bissell lists a trigger that is stuck or being pressed and a tank lid that is not attached securely among the things to check. Turn the machine off and unplug it before removing a tank to inspect it.

If a tank, valve, cap, insert, or seal is cracked, missing, or continues to leak, identify the model and use its parts or support page to find a compatible replacement. Do not assume a generic tank part or seal will fit. Stop using the cleaner if liquid reaches electrical components.

Bissell says striping commonly results from cleaning too quickly or failing to overlap passes. Slow down and overlap your cleaning passes as directed in your model’s instructions. If you see persistent lint, fuzz, or clumps instead, the available guidance does not establish one general fix; consult the support page for your model.

How to choose a replacement part safely
Look up parts by the exact model number, not just by a product family name or appearance. Bissell’s guidance supports inspecting specific filters, belts, and tank seals, but it does not establish that a generic replacement fits every cleaner. Try reversible maintenance first when your model instructions say it is safe, and replace a component only when it is confirmed damaged, worn, or missing. The matching Bissell parts and support page is the right place to verify compatibility before buying.
