Dishwashers marketed as having a “food grinder” use a feature manufacturers typically call a hard-food disposer or food disposer. GE calls its version the Piranha hard-food disposer. It grinds food particles before they go down the drain, but the available model evidence is dated and does not establish a current best-buy ranking.
What does a dishwasher food grinder do?
GE says its Piranha hard-food disposer uses a stainless steel blade to grind food particles before they drain, helping prevent large particles from clogging the wash arms. GE specifies that the blade rotates at 3,600 RPM; this is a manufacturer figure, not an independent comparative test. GE does not state a publication date for its support page.
For shopping, search the exact model’s official specifications for “hard-food disposer” or “food disposer.” The feature does not establish that every dishwasher has a grinder, nor does it show that owners can skip all scraping, rinsing, or filter maintenance. Follow the model’s owner’s manual for food removal and cleaning guidance.

GE’s product page for the GDF520PSDSS describes a disposer and removable filter, but also states that the model is no longer manufactured. It can illustrate the feature, not serve as a current buying recommendation. Its removable filter is model-specific; do not assume another model uses the same filter or replacement part.

How to choose a current dishwasher with a food disposer
- Verify the feature on the exact model. Check the current official product page, specification sheet, and owner’s manual for the complete model number and an explicit hard-food disposer or food disposer listing. A family name or older catalog entry alone is not enough.
- Confirm the installation will fit. Compare the dishwasher’s dimensions and required clearances with the cabinet opening, and check the installation requirements and utility connections.
- Compare practical capacity. Consider rack layout and whether the interior accommodates your household’s dishes, utensils, and cookware.
- Compare the rest of the ownership details. Check noise rating, cycles, water and energy figures, warranty, local service access, and current price. A disposer listing alone does not establish that one machine cleans better or offers better value than another.
- Check filter care. Confirm whether the exact model has a removable filter and consult its manual for the required cleaning and maintenance. Do not assume a disposer eliminates filter upkeep.
