The available evidence does not verify which five carpet spray cleaners BHG selected or tested. Good Housekeeping published a separate carpet stain-remover roundup, but its products and test results cannot be presented as BHG’s. Here is what that comparison can reliably tell you about choosing a spray—and what remains unconfirmed about the BHG list.
What can be verified about the BHG picks?
The five products named by BHG, their rankings, and any BHG testing method or results are not established by the available material. Good Housekeeping’s April 23, 2026 roundup is a separate publication and is not evidence of BHG’s selections.
As a clearly separate comparison, Good Housekeeping lists Bissell Professional Stain & Odor Remover as its best overall, OxiClean Carpet Stain Remover as its best value, Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover as its best fast-acting option, Rocco & Roxie Professional Strength Stain & Odor Eliminator as most versatile, Bissell Pro Oxy Power Spot as its best deep cleaner, and Carbona Oxy Powered Carpet Cleaner as best for old stains. These are GH’s categories and judgments, not BHG picks. Read Good Housekeeping’s roundup and product guidance.
How to choose a carpet spray for the stain
Pet messes and other organic stains
Enzyme formulas are suited to organic stains such as pet messes. If odor matters, check whether the product claims to neutralize odor rather than merely mask it, and confirm that its label covers both the stain and the carpet material.

Colored spills such as wine or coffee
Oxygen-based formulas are suited to colored stains, including wine and coffee. Their suitability still depends on the carpet fiber and the product label; test an inconspicuous area first because some cleaners can discolor or damage certain fibers.
Grease and oily residue
Solvent-based options are more effective for grease or oily residue. Do not assume that a formula intended for other stains will work equally well on oil, or that every solvent product is safe for every carpet.

When a spray is the right format
Good Housekeeping’s guidance is that sprays suit quick, everyday spot cleaning; foams lift stains toward the surface for blotting; and powders can refresh larger areas. For a localized fresh spill, a spray is a practical format. A dried-on spot may call for an applicator that helps work cleaner into the stain: GH describes Carbona Oxy Powered Carpet Cleaner, a comparator rather than a BHG pick, as having an attached sponge and brush.
How to treat a spot without leaving residue
- Check the carpet and product labels. Confirm compatibility with the carpet fiber and follow any restrictions. Test the cleaner in an inconspicuous spot before treating the visible area.
- Blot up excess first. Avoid saturating the carpet. Use the amount and application method stated on that product’s label.
- Allow only the specified dwell time. Directions differ by product. GH reports a 10-minute wait for OxiClean before blotting, up to 12 hours under a damp towel for a Bissell enzyme example used for deeper odors, and up to 60 minutes as the manufacturer-recommended wait for Rocco & Roxie. Those timings are product-specific examples, not general instructions.
- Blot and remove remaining cleaner as directed. GH favors low-sudsing formulas because they are easier to remove, and advises removing residue, which may attract future grime. Follow the label’s rinsing or cleanup directions.
What the cited testing does—and does not—show
Good Housekeeping says its Home Care & Cleaning Lab’s last carpet stain-remover test covered 250 fresh and set-in stains. The roundup describes measured stains—including red wine, coffee, tomato sauce, chocolate syrup, and mustard—applied to white nylon carpet squares, with some left overnight. It says the lab follows product-label directions and assesses cleaning performance, suds, rinsability, dried results, and ease of use; pet-stain products also go to pet owners for home testing. The page was updated April 23, 2026, but does not separately date the test associated with the 250-stain figure. This is GH’s stated methodology, not BHG testing.
