Keep it in bright light, let the soil dry between waterings, and gradually acclimate it before moving it outdoors. These steps help prevent the most common problem—roots sitting in wet soil.
Choose a pot and soil that drain well
Aloe vera is vulnerable to root rot when its roots remain in waterlogged soil. Use a container with unobstructed drainage holes and a freely draining potting medium made for cacti and succulents. A suitable coarse mineral amendment can also improve drainage, but avoid mixes that stay wet. The University of Florida IFAS Extension and NC State Extension both emphasize drainage for aloe care: UF/IFAS aloe vera guidance and NC State’s aloe profile.
Clay is one suitable pot material, but drainage and fit matter more than the material. Choose a container only modestly larger than the root ball; an oversized pot holds more soil and can stay wet longer. UF/IFAS cautions against increasing the pot by more than two sizes when repotting.
How to plant or repot aloe vera
- Select the container: Use a clean pot with drainage holes, sized just somewhat larger than the root ball.
- Add the medium: Fill with cactus and succulent mix or another freely draining medium.
- Position the plant: Set the root ball in the pot so the leaf rosette sits above the soil surface; do not bury the leaves.
- Settle it in: Water according to how wet the medium already is, and let excess water drain away. There is no single waiting period after repotting that applies to every plant and medium.
Repot when the aloe needs more room or its medium needs refreshing. Afterward, continue to let the soil dry between waterings.

Give aloe bright light and acclimate it outdoors
Place indoor aloe in a bright location. NC State suggests a south- or west-facing window; inadequate light can compromise growth. If you move a plant that has been indoors or in shade outside for summer, increase its exposure to brighter conditions gradually. A sudden shift to direct sun can cause sunburn. See NC State Extension’s light guidance and the Royal Horticultural Society’s aloe guide.
Outdoor hardiness depends on location. UF/IFAS says aloe can grow outdoors year-round in zones 8–11, while NC State’s aloe vera profile lists outdoor perennial use in zones 10 and higher. These are region-specific recommendations, not a guarantee for every garden; check local extension guidance and protect plants from frost. Sources: UF/IFAS and NC State’s aloe vera profile.

How often to water aloe vera
Do not rely on a fixed weekly schedule. Check the soil instead: UF/IFAS suggests watering when the top inch is dry to the touch. Then water the medium thoroughly and let all excess drain away. How quickly the soil dries depends on factors such as pot size, light, temperature, and season. Water less often during winter or other cool, slow-growth periods. When practical, direct water onto the soil rather than allowing it to collect around the leaves. Sources: UF/IFAS, NC State Extension, and Singapore’s National Parks Board.
Does aloe vera need fertilizer?
Aloe does not need heavy feeding. If growth is active and feeding seems necessary, use a restrained approach rather than fertilizing frequently. Singapore’s National Parks Board advises at most monthly feeding with balanced fertilizer at half strength; other cited guidance is less prescriptive. Treat that as an upper limit from that source, not a requirement for every aloe.

How to propagate aloe vera pups
Established aloe plants commonly produce offsets, or pups, around the base. Separating an offset and potting it in well-drained medium is the practical home propagation method. The cited sources do not establish a universal minimum pup size or root length for separation, so assess each plant rather than relying on a fixed threshold. For propagation guidance, see NC State Extension, Singapore’s National Parks Board, and the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension.

- Soft or rotting base, or soil that stays wet: Check that the pot drains freely, empty any standing water, and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Waterlogged conditions are associated with root rot.
- Sunburn after a move outdoors: The light change may have been too abrupt. Return the plant to a less intense position and increase exposure gradually.
- Mealybugs or other pests: Inspect the plant closely and address the infestation. Mealybugs are noted by Singapore’s National Parks Board; NC State also lists aphids and disease concerns. The right response depends on the pest and the plant’s condition, so avoid assuming one treatment will solve every case.
