Grow a Bloodgood Japanese maple in a sheltered spot with moist, well-drained soil. In hot-summer climates, morning sun and afternoon shade reduce stress; cooler regions can often provide more sun if the soil does not dry out. Water during dry spells, mulch to conserve moisture, and leave enough room for a substantial small tree.
What is a Bloodgood Japanese maple?
Bloodgood is the cultivar Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’, a deciduous ornamental maple with dark red-purple leaves that turn red in autumn. North Carolina State Extension describes its form as upright, broad and dense, and notes that Bloodgood Nursery on Long Island sold the cultivar before World War II. NC State Extension’s plant profile describes it as a large shrub or small tree.
Published size estimates are approximate rather than guaranteed dimensions: NC State reports potential growth up to 20 feet tall and wide, while the Royal Horticultural Society gives a mature height and spread of 2.5–4 metres and 10–20 years to maturity. Allow ample space rather than treating Bloodgood as a dwarf maple. RHS plant profile.
Where should you plant it?
Balance sun and summer heat
Choose a sheltered site away from drying winds. Bloodgood generally tolerates direct sun better in cooler northern areas, provided soil moisture is adequate. In hot-summer or southern locations, afternoon shade helps limit leaf scorch; morning sun with afternoon or dappled shade is a sensible starting point. Plan for mature canopy space
Check the available space against the published dimensions before planting, including room for the canopy and nearby paths or structures. A site that accommodates the tree’s natural form is preferable to repeated pruning just to keep it small.
Consider late frost
Bloodgood leafs out early, so a late spring frost can damage tender new foliage. Avoid exposed frost pockets where practical, particularly in colder locations.

What soil and planting conditions does it need?
Aim for moist, well-drained soil. NC State describes a preference for acidic, organic soil; the RHS lists moist but well-drained soil with acid or neutral pH. In heavy clay, improve drainage by planting slightly high or using a raised bed. UF/IFAS notes Japanese maples can grow in clay where the ground slopes enough to prevent water accumulating around roots.
Do not choose a spot where water routinely stands around the root zone. UF/IFAS recommends several inches of mulch under the canopy; its Japanese maple profile specifies a 2- to 3-inch layer. Keep mulch clear of the trunk and protect the trunk from lawn equipment. UF/IFAS Japanese maple guidance.

How should you water and mulch it?
Maintain soil moisture during dry weather, especially while the tree is establishing or if it is planted in a hot, exposed site. Check the soil rather than relying on a rigid schedule: the goal is to prevent the root zone from drying out while preserving drainage. Apply a 2- to 3-inch mulch layer beneath the canopy, without piling it against the trunk. Mulch slows moisture loss but does not replace watering during prolonged dry spells.
Why are the leaves turning brown or developing spots?
Brown, scorched-looking leaf edges or patches can follow hot weather, inadequate water, excessive exposure or drying winds. Before assuming disease, assess whether the soil is dry or waterlogged, whether the tree receives harsh afternoon sun, and whether browning is concentrated on exposed foliage. UF/IFAS identifies hot summer conditions and dry periods as scorch risks, while a Minnesota Extension response on a newly planted Bloodgood also highlights protection from sweeping winds and hot afternoon sun. Prune selectively to guide structure, remove problematic branches and prevent rubbing or included (embedded) bark. UF/IFAS advises training trunks and branches while they are small; removing some small twigs can also reveal the trunk and bark. Drooping branches may be removed where pedestrian clearance is needed.

The cited guidance does not establish one pruning month that fits every climate and objective. Make small, selective structural cuts, and seek local advice before larger corrective work. Do not rely on repeated size-control pruning in place of choosing a suitable planting location.
How can you protect Bloodgood in winter?
A Minnesota Extension response describes Bloodgood as hardy to zone 5 but emphasizes that location matters. It recommends a protected site away from late-winter sun and winds, watering until the ground freezes, mulching and wrapping the trunk over winter. Treat this as regional guidance, not a guarantee that an exposed zone 5 site will be safe. Minnesota Extension response.
Is it too late in the season to plant?
The cited profiles do not establish a universal planting cutoff date. The practical decision depends on local conditions: whether the ground is workable and drains well, how much time remains before hard freezing, and whether the tree can be watered while establishing. If cold weather is near or the site is exposed, waiting for a more favorable local planting window is the safer choice; consult a local nursery or extension service for timing in your area.
