Check the garment’s care label, identify the stain if you can, pretreat it with a compatible product, and inspect the garment after washing. Do not dry it again until the stain is gone: the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) warns that drying can permanently set stains.
What to do first
- Check the care label. Confirm whether the item is washable and what water temperature and treatments it permits. For dry-clean-only clothing or delicate fabrics, consult a professional cleaner rather than experimenting with household solvents.
- Identify the stain if possible. Treatment varies by stain, and using the wrong method can make removal harder. If you do not know what caused it, ACI recommends rinsing or soaking in cold water before treating it.
- Spot-test a product where appropriate. Apply it to a hidden area first and check for color change or damage, as Whirlpool advises. Follow both the garment and product labels.
- Pretreat, then wash. Use a stain-specific product as directed, and launder at a temperature allowed by both the garment label and the applicable stain guidance.
- Inspect before drying. If the stain remains, repeat a compatible treatment or ask a professional cleaner about a stubborn stain. Air-drying makes it easier to check the result without another dryer cycle.
ACI says not to put a garment in the dryer until the stain is removed. Heat is not a universal solution: the appropriate temperature depends on the fabric and stain, and Whirlpool notes that hot water can set certain stains.
Treatments for common dried-in stains
Older stains in general
ACI says an older stain may respond to pretreatment or soaking in a product containing enzymes. That is a possibility, not a guarantee; follow the product directions and garment care label.
Dried blood
For dried blood, ACI recommends pretreating or soaking in warm water with an enzyme-containing product, then laundering. Its cold-water advice is for fresh blood, so do not apply that instruction to dried blood as though the situations were the same.

Set-in oil or grease
For oil that remains after a garment has been washed and dried, Whirlpool recommends checking the care label, spot-testing, and using label-safe warmth. It describes dish soap and warm soaking, and says an enzyme-based cleaner may improve the chance of treating the remaining oil. This is oil-specific guidance, not a general treatment for every stain; use only methods compatible with the garment.
Stains on white clothing
Whirlpool’s guidance for white clothing describes soaking in water at the temperature allowed by the care label, using enzyme detergent, and air-drying as the stain fades. White fabric does not make every temperature or bleach safe. Check the care label and use bleach only when it is compatible with the item and appropriate for the particular stain.

Other stains
Use ACI’s stain-by-stain guide rather than treating all marks alike. Some stains may have a fabric-safe bleach option, but ACI warns that sodium hypochlorite bleach can intensify rust discoloration. It also says dried water-based paint cannot be removed and that nail polish may be impossible to remove. Do not assume bleach or a solvent will work simply because the stain is stubborn.

If the garment is dry-clean-only, delicate, valuable, or still stained after label-compatible treatment, take it to a commercial dry cleaner and explain what caused the stain and what products have already been used. ACI notes that heavy or set-in stains may require professional dry cleaning. Some stains may be permanent, so repeated treatment is not a guarantee.
