When to use a stain-specific cleaner instead
For persistent lime, rust, or hard-water deposits, a purpose-made cleaner formulated for those stains is a separate option. For example, Clorox describes its bleach-free Heavy Duty Stain & Ring Remover as intended for hard-water, lime, and rust stains. Critical warning: never mix vinegar and bleach
Do not mix vinegar—or any other acid—with bleach. Clorox warns that vinegar and bleach can form chlorine gas. Poison Control explains that bleach added to an acid-containing toilet cleaner can also release chlorine gas, which may cause rapid respiratory symptoms and irritate the skin and eyes.
