Yes—DIY LED light panels can work with Home Assistant if a compatible controller runs the LEDs. For a straightforward addressable-light build, use an ESP32 with WLED: connect it to your home network, let Home Assistant discover it, then control the panel through its light entity. ESPHome is a good alternative when you want to define the device and its behavior in ESPHome configuration.
Choose WLED or ESPHome
Both approaches connect a controller-driven panel to Home Assistant, but they suit different builds.

For common addressable LEDs, WLED is a natural starting point: Home Assistant lists WS2812B, WS2811, SK6812, APA102, and WS2801 among supported chipsets. Check the current documentation for the exact chipset and color mode you plan to use; support for a chipset does not guarantee every color control or effect behaves identically.
Plan the panel before wiring it
Decide what the panel needs to do and how it will be built before selecting the controller, strip, and supply. A pixel-based panel for ambient patterns has different requirements from one intended to produce high-quality white light or illuminate a work surface.

- LED type and white output: Choose an addressable type supported by your firmware and decide whether you need a dedicated white channel. A WS2812B addressable LED strip is one relevant option, but the chipset alone does not determine the best strip for every panel.
- Panel layout: Set the panel dimensions, LED count, pixel density, and wiring route. These choices affect how the LEDs are mapped in firmware and whether you can divide the panel into useful zones.
- Controller: WLED’s setup guide recommends ESP32 for a new project. Confirm that the specific board and LED configuration match the firmware guidance before connecting hardware. WLED Getting Started Guide
- Power and wiring: The required supply depends on the selected LEDs, their count, wiring, and intended operating conditions. There is no responsible universal amperage or wattage for an unspecified panel. Size the regulated supply using the documentation for your exact components and wiring design.
WLED’s basic connection guidance for a digital strip identifies power, data, and ground; analog strips use a separate channel for each color. Follow the selected board and LED documentation for the actual connections rather than treating this overview as a wiring diagram.
Connect a WLED panel to Home Assistant
- Select compatible addressable LEDs and a controller. Confirm the chipset against WLED’s guidance and choose a supported board. For a new WLED build, the project guide recommends ESP32.
- Install and configure WLED. Set up the firmware for the LED type and panel layout, then connect the LEDs according to the board and chipset instructions.
- Join the device to your home network. Keep the controller reachable on the network used by Home Assistant.
- Add the WLED device. Home Assistant can discover WLED automatically. If it does not, add the WLED integration and enter the device hostname or IP address. Check the integration documentation for current setup details: Home Assistant WLED integration.
- Use its light entity. Control the functions exposed by the firmware, which can include on/off, brightness, color, effects, and segments.
Use segments for panel zones
A single LED run does not have to behave as one undivided light. WLED segments let you map portions of the LEDs as separate sections and control those segments individually in WLED and Home Assistant. That can suit a panel with distinct regions for artwork, indicators, or different colors, provided the physical LED order and firmware mapping match the intended zones.

Use ESPHome instead
With ESPHome, configure a supported light component for the LEDs and connect the device to Home Assistant through ESPHome’s native API. The integration can discover devices or accept manual setup using the device host and port; its documentation gives 6053 as the default API port. Some analog RGB+CCT and digital RGBCCT setups do not expose independent color and color-temperature sliders in Home Assistant; the WLED integration documentation says Home Assistant can manage one color model at a time. Confirm the behavior for your LED and firmware configuration before building around a particular control scheme. Effects and segment behavior also depend on how the LEDs are configured.
