If by “non-electric” you mean a range that cooks with gas, compare natural-gas and propane models. If you mean an appliance that can cook without household electricity, do not assume a gas range meets that requirement: gas models may still use power for ignition, controls, the clock, lights, or oven operation. Check the specific model’s manual before buying.
What “non-electric range” means
For most range shopping, “non-electric” means the cooking fuel is gas rather than electricity. Gas ranges use natural gas or propane and need a suitable fuel supply. A dual-fuel range is different: it has a gas cooktop and an electric oven, so it needs both a gas line and electrical service. Consumer Reports says dual-fuel ranges require a 240-volt outlet; confirm the selected model’s installation instructions and your home’s supply.
A gas label alone does not establish that a range will work during a power outage. Amana notes that gas ranges connect to a gas line for cooking and an electrical outlet for functions such as the clock and oven lights. Check the model’s documentation for ignition, controls, lighting, and oven operation without power. The available buying guidance does not identify a particular current range proven to operate entirely without household electricity.
Choose the fuel supply first
- Natural gas: Choose a compatible natural-gas model if your home has a suitable gas line. If it does not, adding a line may require installation work.
- Propane (LP): Confirm the range is configured for propane or that the manufacturer specifies an approved conversion process for that exact model. Do not assume a conversion kit fits every range.
- No existing gas supply: Compare the cost and feasibility of installing a gas supply with choosing another cooking fuel. A gas range cannot be installed as a gas appliance without an appropriate supply and connection.
Whirlpool’s 2026 buying guide describes gas ranges as typically having four to six burners. Treat that as a category-level description, not a promise about every model.

Compare range configurations and useful features
| Configuration | Cooking setup | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gas range | Gas cooktop and gas-fuelled oven | Natural-gas or propane compatibility, electrical requirements, burner layout, and oven functions for the exact model. |
| Dual-fuel range | Gas cooktop and electric oven | Both gas supply and electrical service; Consumer Reports says dual-fuel ranges require a 240-volt outlet. |
| Electric range | Electric cooktop and oven | Not a gas range; consider it if the priority is an electric cooking appliance rather than gas-fuelled cooking. |
For the cooktop, look at burner count, placement, and whether the layout fits the pots and pans you use. For the oven, compare capacity and the functions you will actually use, such as convection if offered. These are model-specific choices, not a reliable ranking of performance by themselves.
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide cautions: “Don’t shop by Btu. Higher British thermal units don’t guarantee faster heating in our tests of gas ranges.” Use independent test results where available rather than treating a higher burner BTU rating as proof of faster cooking.

Measure the opening and verify the fit
Whirlpool’s 2026 guide says most ranges are 30 to 36 inches wide, but those category figures are not a substitute for the dimensions of the appliance and kitchen opening you are considering. Bosch’s range guide discusses 30- and 36-inch configurations. Verify the exact specification sheet and installation instructions before ordering.
- Measure the opening’s width, height, and depth, not just the old range’s stated width.
- Check the required clearances and whether a freestanding or slide-in design suits the cabinets and countertop.
- Confirm where the gas shutoff, connector, and electrical outlet sit relative to the appliance.
- Check delivery access and the route into the kitchen, especially for a larger or heavier range.
Plan for installation and safe connections
Read the selected range’s installation manual before purchase. The required fuel, electrical connection, clearances, and connection hardware vary by model. Amana recommends checking the electrical supply and consulting the product’s Use and Care Guide and installation instructions for exact requirements and measurements; it also recommends professional installation.

Frigidaire’s installation guidance says to ensure a metal gas shutoff valve is behind the range and in good condition. It also states that its delivery team will not install a propane appliance and directs propane customers to a licensed propane contractor. These are Frigidaire’s instructions; the chosen range’s manual and local requirements govern the installation. Arrange qualified help for gas work, fuel conversion, or electrical work when required.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide says most ranges cost between $700 and $3,000; it notes that coil models may cost less than $700 and pro-style ranges can exceed $3,000. Those are broad figures across range categories, not a current quote for a particular gas model. Compare the complete installed cost for your situation, including any needed supply-line work, conversion, electrical changes, and installation.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Define your requirement: Decide whether you want gas cooking or need the range to operate without household electricity.
- Confirm the fuel: Identify whether your home has natural gas or propane and verify exact-model compatibility.
- Choose the configuration: Decide between an all-gas range and dual fuel, accounting for the dual-fuel electric oven’s electrical requirement.
- Check the fit: Measure the opening and review the range’s specification sheet, clearances, and utility locations.
- Review installation needs: Read the manual and arrange qualified installation, especially for propane or fuel conversion.
- Compare performance evidence: Evaluate independent model tests and useful features; do not choose on burner BTUs alone.
