Types of Kitchen Sinks: How to Choose the Right Style

Kitchen sinks differ by mounting style, bowl layout, material, and purpose. Compare the trade-offs and verify the exact sink’s fit before buying.

Kitchen sinks are classified in several ways: by how they mount, how many bowls they have, what they’re made of, and what work they’re designed to do. Those categories overlap—a farmhouse sink, for example, can also be stainless steel and single-bowl. Choose the combination that fits your daily tasks and the constraints of your counter, cabinet, plumbing, and available space.

Kitchen sink types at a glance

Choice Main options What changes
Installation Top-mount/drop-in, undermount, farmhouse/apron-front; some models are dual-mount or wall-mount How the sink meets the counter, what surfaces it suits, and whether cabinetry or installation work must change
Bowl layout Single, double, offset, low-divide, or triple bowl Uninterrupted room for large cookware versus separation for simultaneous tasks
Material Stainless steel, granite or quartz composite, fireclay, or enameled cast iron Appearance, care, weight, sound, and product-specific performance
Function Workstation, bar/prep, or commercial Whether the sink is a main cleanup basin, a secondary station, or intended for a hospitality setting

For a construction or remodeling project, start with what the counter and cabinet can accommodate. Then decide how much basin separation you need and compare materials that suit your care preferences and support conditions.

Installation styles: how the sink meets the counter

Top-mount or drop-in

A drop-in sink sits in a countertop cutout with its rim resting on the counter. It is commonly a practical replacement option because the countertop generally does not need to be disturbed; The Home Depot describes these sinks as usable with almost every countertop style, while KOHLER calls top-mount models the easiest to install and notes their common use with laminate. Check the replacement model’s cutout and rim dimensions against the existing opening.

Undermount

An undermount sink attaches beneath the countertop, leaving no raised rim at the counter edge. That makes it easier to sweep crumbs directly into the basin. KOHLER identifies solid-surface, stone, and quartz counters for undermount use; confirm that the specific countertop, sink, support system, and installation instructions are compatible before choosing one.

Farmhouse or apron-front

A farmhouse sink has an exposed front apron and often a deep, broad basin that can accommodate large cookware. It may require a compatible base cabinet, although some models are designed to retrofit existing cabinetry. Do not assume every apron-front sink requires identical cabinet modifications: check the model’s dimensions, support needs, and installation instructions.

Other mounting options

Some sinks are dual-mount, meaning the model can be installed as either top-mount or undermount; Delta describes this option in its kitchen sink guidance. Wall-mount sinks are another less common style listed by KOHLER. For either option, follow the individual product’s installation and compatibility requirements.

Bowl configurations: one basin or several?

Single bowl

A single, uninterrupted basin gives large pots, pans, and platters more room. KOHLER puts it directly: “Single-bowl sinks are ideal for washing large pots and platters and available in a variety of sizes and materials.” A single bowl is a strong fit if oversized cookware is a regular part of cleanup or you prefer one open workspace.

Double bowl

Two basins let you separate jobs, such as washing in one side and rinsing in the other, or handling food prep and cleanup at once. The trade-off is the center divider: it can make large pans harder to fit. Consider the actual cookware you wash rather than choosing a double bowl simply because it offers more compartments.

Offset and low-divide bowls

Offset designs use unequal bowls, such as a smaller side basin paired with a larger main basin. A low-divide sink keeps separation but has a shorter partition, making it easier to move or position larger pots across the bowls. These layouts can be a compromise when you want task separation without giving up as much usable basin space.

Triple bowl

A triple-bowl sink adds a small third basin, which The Home Depot describes as useful for prep. It is a more specialized arrangement and needs enough counter and cabinet space; weigh the extra task area against the room lost to additional dividers.

Sink materials: compare care, weight, and sound

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is widely available in different mounting styles. The Home Depot presents it as a balance of cost, durability, and ease of cleaning, and notes that a lower gauge number indicates thicker steel. Its guide also recommends considering sound-damping pads and brushed finishes. KOHLER makes rust- and stain-resistance claims for its own stainless products and provides product-specific gauge and sound-absorption specifications; those details should not be generalized to every stainless sink. Compare the individual model’s construction and care instructions.

Granite or quartz composite

Composite sinks combine stone material with resin, but formulations differ by maker. The Home Depot describes quartz-and-resin composite as low-maintenance and resistant to scratches, stains, and heat; Delta describes its granite composite sinks as nonporous and available in colors. Treat such performance descriptions as product or manufacturer claims, and check the exact model’s care guidance rather than assuming all composites perform identically.

Fireclay

Fireclay is clay fired at high temperatures and is commonly used for farmhouse sinks. The Home Depot describes its smooth glazed surface and resistance properties, while KOHLER characterizes its own fireclay sinks as smooth, nonporous, and durable. Fireclay models can be heavy, so verify the sink’s weight and the cabinet’s required support.

Account for cabinet support and protect the finish during handling, installation, and use. Follow the maker’s maintenance guidance.

Special-purpose sinks and useful features

Workstation sinks

A workstation sink has ledges that support or guide accessories such as cutting boards, trays, or colanders, adding a prep surface over the basin. The ledge dimensions and accessories are model-specific, so confirm that each accessory fits the sink you select.

Bar and prep sinks

A smaller bar sink can serve as a secondary prep or beverage station, often on an island or near a home bar. Decide whether a second basin would improve how people move through the kitchen, then confirm there is room for the sink, faucet, drain, and plumbing.

Commercial sinks

Commercial sinks are generally larger and intended for restaurant or hospitality settings. For a residential kitchen, choose one only after confirming that its size, installation requirements, and intended use suit the project.

How to check size and fit before buying

Sink dimensions are not interchangeable. The Home Depot defines length as side-to-side, width as front-to-back, and bowl depth as the deepest point from the sink top. Its buying guide gives 22 by 30 inches and a 7–10-inch average depth as standard references, and describes a 33-by-22-inch sink as typical for a 36-inch base cabinet. These are retailer guide figures, not universal sizing rules; the model’s own specifications and your site measurements take precedence.

  1. Measure the current opening. Record the countertop cutout and, where relevant, the dimensions of the current sink. Do not rely on the nominal sink size alone.
  2. Check the cabinet. Measure interior space and verify the sink’s stated minimum cabinet size, required support, and clearance. Pay particular attention to the base cabinet for an apron-front model.
  3. Confirm countertop compatibility. Check whether the counter material and construction support the selected mounting style and the model’s installation method.
  4. Locate the drain and faucet provisions. Compare drain position, fixture holes, faucet placement, and plumbing clearance with the existing layout and the sink’s specifications.
  5. Review the exact model’s installation instructions. Resolve any mismatch in cutout, cabinet, support, or plumbing requirements before purchase or countertop work.

Choose by the work your kitchen needs to do

  • Choose a single bowl when fitting large cookware and having open basin space matter most.
  • Choose a double, offset, or low-divide layout when separating tasks is useful; compare divider height and bowl size with your largest pans.
  • Choose drop-in when a rimmed installation suits the counter or you are replacing a sink without changing the countertop.
  • Choose undermount when the countertop is compatible and you want a clear counter edge for sweeping debris into the basin.
  • Choose farmhouse/apron-front when its exposed front and basin style suit the design, and the cabinet can accommodate the particular model.
  • Choose material by more than appearance: compare maintenance, sound, weight, support, and the manufacturer’s claims for the exact sink.
