Shape the space around those activities, then make it comfortable with suitable shade, weather-ready seating, clear circulation, plants, and lighting. These 82 ideas are starting points to adapt to your home, climate, and available space—not a one-size-fits-all design plan.
Plan the space around how you will use it
Before choosing furniture or finishes, decide what the outdoor area needs to do. Mississippi State University Extension recommends considering sun, shade, wind, noise, soil, and existing site conditions, then treating the area like an outdoor room with a clear purpose. Its home landscape design guidance describes spaces for eating, relaxing, talking, playing, and gardening.
- Pick a primary activity. Decide whether the space is mainly for dining, conversation, reclining, play, or growing plants.
- Map the route through it. Keep chairs and tables out of the main walkway, and plan how people will move between the house, seating, dining, and yard.
- Consider sun and weather. Notice where shade falls at the hours you expect to use the space, as well as exposure to wind and rain.
- Use the view. Place seats toward a garden feature, a pleasant outlook, or a focal point rather than automatically lining them against a wall.
For a multi-use patio, sketch the zones together before buying anything. University of Delaware Cooperative Extension recommends considering which areas should sit next to one another, the routes between them, how they fit existing features, and the views from seating. Its landscape planning examples, reviewed in March 2025, offer approximate space figures—not building-code requirements:
| Activity | Approximate planning space |
|---|---|
| Sitting or eating for two | About 25 sq. ft. |
| Sitting, eating, or lounging for four to eight | 64–100 sq. ft. |
| Standing conversation | About 8 sq. ft. per person |
| Cooking and food preparation | About 25 sq. ft. |
These are rough landscape-planning examples from Delaware Extension, not universal minimums. Oklahoma State University Extension also notes that a roughly square or 2-to-3 proportion can be more useful for entertaining than a long, narrow shape; it is design guidance, not a required patio dimension. See its outdoor-room planning guidance when considering shape, overhead cover, seasonal sun, and future plant growth.

- Place a dining table close to the door used to carry food outdoors.
- Give a conversation area its own arrangement of facing seats.
- Separate dining and lounging with planters rather than a solid barrier.
- Use a rug rated for outdoor exposure to visually anchor a seating group.
- Put a bench along an underused edge without narrowing the main route.
- Arrange chairs around a garden view or focal point.
- Reserve a clear path from the house to the yard before setting out furniture.
- Use a compact side table beside each frequently used seat.
- Place a serving surface near the dining zone for food and drinks.
- Keep children’s play space visible from the main seating area.
- Set up a container-gardening corner where watering is convenient.
- Design a long porch as separate seating and entry zones instead of one narrow furniture row.
- Use a low wall or built-in edge to suggest the boundary of an outdoor room.
Shade and daytime comfort
Shade is a practical comfort feature when you plan to use a patio during the day. UF/IFAS names trees, umbrellas, and pergolas; Illinois Extension also lists canopy tents, shade sails, retractable awnings, and curtains or shades attached to a structure. These options differ in mobility, permanence, and weather exposure, so choose for the site rather than treating them as interchangeable. Nancy Kreith, University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator, said, “Shaded areas let you stay outside longer without getting exhausted from the sun.”
- Use a movable patio umbrella to shade a dining table or a flexible seating spot.
- Choose an umbrella arrangement that can be repositioned as the sun shifts.
- Add a shade sail where its attachment points and local conditions are suitable.
- Use a retractable awning when adjustable cover is useful for a wall-side patio.
- Consider a pergola for a more permanent overhead element.
- Grow a tree as a longer-term source of shade, allowing for mature size and placement.
- Set up a canopy tent for occasional shade, and anchor its legs securely.
- Remove pooled rainwater from a canopy promptly; Illinois Extension cautions that wind or heavy rain can damage canopy tents.
- Add outdoor curtains or shades to a suitable structure for adjustable screening.
- Cover at least part of the outdoor living area overhead if daytime use and seasonal sun make it useful.
For options and the canopy-weather caveat, see Illinois Extension’s backyard shade guidance. For trees, umbrellas, and pergolas, see UF/IFAS Outdoor Living Spaces.

Seating and furniture
- Choose a dining set sized to the number of people who will use it most often.
- Use a bench when you want flexible seating along a wall or edge.
- Try a pair of chairs and a small table for a compact conversation nook.
- Add a chaise or another reclining seat where lounging is the priority.
- Give guests a mix of seat types, such as chairs and a bench, if the footprint allows.
- Place seats where they take advantage of a view without blocking circulation.
- Add cushions in outdoor-rated polyester or acrylic fabric; UF/IFAS describes these fabrics as resistant to rot or fading.
- Consider polyester-filled cushions, which UF/IFAS describes as quick to drain and dry.
- Consider wrought iron, aluminum, teak, or suitable wicker for furniture exposed to rain and humidity, as listed by UF/IFAS.
- Use a garden wall that can double as seating where a boundary and extra places to sit are both useful.
- Position a small table within reach of the seats used most often.
- Place a serving table between the indoor door and outdoor dining zone.
- Choose furniture dimensions that leave comfortable routes around pulled-out chairs.
- Keep a lightweight chair or stool available for occasional extra seating.
These material suggestions are general guidance, not a promise of maintenance-free performance or a specific lifespan. UF/IFAS’s outdoor living overview also discusses seating, landscape placement, and furniture materials.
Privacy and greenery
- Use a hedge to screen a seating area where a living boundary suits the site.
- Train a vine on a trellis to add privacy without using a full solid wall.
- Use an open fence when some enclosure is desired but airflow matters.
- Place evergreen plants where year-round screening is useful, allowing room for mature growth.
- Use large containers to mark the edge of a dining or lounging zone.
- Group containers to create a visual screen that can be adjusted over time.
- Put fragrant plants near seats where people can enjoy them.
- Use shrubs or planting beds to soften a hard wall or fence.
- Place a focal planter where it helps distinguish the entry to an outdoor room.
- Use plants to frame, rather than obstruct, a garden view.
- Group plants with similar light and moisture preferences.
- Choose plants for the actual sun, shade, and moisture conditions at the location.
- Leave room for roots, mature width, and maintenance access when siting planting.
- Plan living screens with the understanding that plants mature and eventually decline.
Mississippi State Extension recommends matching plants to site microclimates and grouping them by type and growing preferences. Its landscape design guidance discusses enclosure with fences, building sides, and evergreen plants; open fences or plantings can retain airflow. UF/IFAS also suggests hedges and vines on trellises for privacy.

Lighting and evening use
- Light a walkway so people can orient themselves after dark.
- Use low-level lighting near a seating area for a softer evening atmosphere.
- Highlight a tree or planting as a nighttime focal point.
- Add lighting to social areas intended for nighttime use.
- Consider LED or solar landscape lights where lower-intensity guidance lighting is enough.
- Use separate lighting approaches for wayfinding and for tasks such as food preparation.
- Place fixtures to avoid directing glare into seating or neighboring windows.
- Check local requirements and product instructions before installing outdoor electrical fixtures.
UF/IFAS identifies LED and solar lights as energy-efficient options, while noting that they do not provide the intense light of traditional bulbs. Lighting for orientation, accent, and activity has different jobs; select for the intended use rather than assuming one fixture suits all. Mississippi State Extension recommends lighting for social areas used at night. Sources: UF/IFAS and Mississippi State Extension.
Finishing touches and flexible use
- Use a weather-suitable outdoor rug to give a lounge area a stronger sense of place.
- Add a side table where guests can set down a drink or book.
- Keep a small serving cart near the dining zone if food moves between indoors and out.
- Use containers to bring greenery to a hard-surfaced porch.

- Make one corner a reading nook with a comfortable seat and task-appropriate light.
- Set aside a surface for gardening tools in a planting area, away from dining and lounge routes.
- Use a movable stool or lightweight chair when the space needs to shift between uses.
- Keep frequently used items close to the activity they support.
- Leave some open floor area rather than filling every corner with furniture.
- Position a dining area to connect conveniently with food preparation or serving.
- Use a low planting edge to soften the transition between patio and garden.
- Arrange a small group of seats around a shared focal point rather than in a straight line.
- Make an entry porch welcoming with a clear approach and a seat that does not obstruct the door.
- Use a covered portion of a porch for activities that benefit from overhead protection.
- Keep a flexible zone open for occasional guests or changing seasonal uses.
- Review the arrangement as plants grow and shade patterns change.
- Choose finishes and furnishings for actual exposure to traffic, sun, rain, and humidity.
Match the idea to the conditions
Before settling on a layout, assess the place at the times it will be used. Consider sun and shade, wind, noise, soil, existing features, and how routes connect. The right combination may be a simple dining corner, a shaded lounge, or distinct zones for several activities.
