For light tarnish on plain, undecorated everyday silver, use a silver polishing cloth sparingly. Avoid DIY cleaning on valuable, historic, plated, decorated, hollow, or composite objects; repeated polishing removes some silver and can wear away plating or detail.
Why silver tarnishes—and why cleaning can cause damage
Silver tarnish is mainly black silver sulfide, formed when silver reacts with sulfur-containing compounds in the air. Sterling silver is typically 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper, according to the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI); tarnish can affect the surface over time.
Polishing does not simply lift tarnish away: it also removes some silver. Repeated treatment can wear through a thin silver coating and soften or remove engraved, chased, embossed, or other surface detail. The goal should be to remove only what is necessary, not to make every object look uniformly bright.
Inspect the object before choosing a method
Check for marks indicating sterling silver or silver plate, and look closely for features that affect cleaning: hollow sections, solder joins, gilding, inlays, coatings, and nonmetal components such as wood, bone, or ivory. A method that is tolerable for a plain solid-silver spoon may damage a plated tray, a handled knife, or a decorated object.

- Silver plate: The silver layer is thin, so any tarnish removal can contribute to wearing it away. CCI cautions that tarnish removal may damage plated objects.
- Hollow pieces or sealed sections: Do not let liquid enter hollow components. Immersion and electrochemical cleaning are unsuitable for some hollow objects.
- Gilding, inlays, and decoration: Polish can damage gilding, while dips may over-clean chased, engraved, or embossed detail.
- Composite objects: Wood, bone, ivory, niello, bronze, and stainless-steel knife blades can make wet cleaning or dips hazardous. Protect components that must not get wet.
If the piece is valuable, historic, or personally important, ICON advises leaving tarnish removal to a specialist metals conservator.
Remove dirt before treating tarnish
For an object that can safely get wet, CCI recommends removing dust, grease, and other residues with detergent and water before addressing tarnish. Keep water away from vulnerable nonmetal parts and prevent it from entering hollow sections. Rinse and dry the object thoroughly. If you cannot safely wet or rinse the whole piece, do not improvise with immersion.

Choose the least aggressive suitable method
| Method | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Silver polishing cloth | Light tarnish on plain, undecorated everyday silver | Contains abrasive material and removes some silver, but is gentler than liquid, paste, or foam polish. |
| Precipitated calcium carbonate polish | Careful, localized polishing when a mild abrasive paste is appropriate | Still abrasive; rubbing removes silver as well as tarnish. |
| Silver dip | Potentially heavy tarnish on an object whose materials and construction are compatible | Can over-clean, harm other materials, and may be followed by rapid re-tarnishing. |
| Aluminum-contact electrochemical cleaning | Not a universal household shortcut; suitability depends on construction and finish | Can leave a dull, matte surface; guidance differs on its effects on finish and design. |
Light tarnish: use a silver polishing cloth
For plain, undecorated silver with only light tarnish, a silver polishing cloth is the most cautious practical starting point. CCI says these cloths contain abrasive material but are gentler than liquid, paste, or foam polishes because they carry a lower concentration of abrasive particles. ICON also describes them for large areas of plain, undecorated silver.
Use the cloth sparingly and stop when the tarnish is sufficiently reduced. Do not substitute general-purpose metal polish: CCI says it is more abrasive than silver polish. Even a purpose-made cloth removes some surface material.

Localized polishing: precipitated calcium carbonate paste
CCI describes a mild polish made from precipitated calcium carbonate and water. Its procedure uses a small amount on a cotton pad, gentle rubbing, replacement of soiled pads, and pauses to wipe, rinse, and inspect. This is still an abrasive treatment, not a way to clean without removing silver. A darkened pad does not prove tarnish remains; the abrasive may also be removing silver.
Heavy tarnish: treat dips cautiously
CCI says chemical dips dissolve tarnish faster than the underlying silver, but immersion can still over-clean an object. Dips may harm wood, niello, bronze, and stainless-steel knife blades, and should not be used on sealed hollow parts. Where a dip is suitable, minimize exposure, follow the product directions, rinse away residue, and dry thoroughly. ICON notes that a dipped surface can tarnish again quickly.

The aluminum-and-solution approach is not a safe-for-all recipe
CCI describes reducing tarnish when silver contacts aluminum in a warm sodium-carbonate solution, followed by thorough rinsing. It warns that rough silver particles left on the surface may produce a dull, matte finish and says not to use the method on hollow components. ICON advises against electrochemical cleaners because, in its guidance, they deposit another metal that can obscure the original finish and design. Given these risks and the difference in conservation guidance, do not treat an improvised foil-and-baking-soda recipe as suitable for every silver object.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Slow tarnish with suitable storage
Reducing exposure to sulfur-containing gases and moisture can slow re-tarnishing and limit the need for further polishing. CCI says silver is best stored below 50% relative humidity in its preventive-conservation guidance; this is a conservation recommendation, not a guarantee that tarnish will never form. ICON recommends dry, ventilated surroundings and describes sulfur-absorbing materials for storage cases. No cloth or case prevents tarnish completely.
