To fix broken plastic, first identify the plastic and the kind of damage; the right adhesive depends on both. A close-fitting crack in a household object is a different repair from a missing piece, flexible part, or vehicle component. For parts that are safety-critical, load-bearing, exposed to high heat or pressure, or used for food contact, these general adhesive steps do not establish a safe repair—follow the manufacturer’s repair guidance or replace the part.
How do I fix cracked plastic?
Start by assessing what broke and what the item must withstand. A clean break with matching edges is usually a more suitable candidate for an adhesive joint than a hole, missing fragment, or damaged tab. Consider whether the repaired part will carry weight, flex, get hot or wet, or experience vibration. If failure could cause injury or damage, do not rely on a general household glue repair.
- Identify the material. Look for molded-in letters or numbers, or check the product documentation. Loctite’s U.S. selection guidance covers PVC, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polycarbonate (PC), ABS, PET, and acrylic/PMMA. Check the adhesive maker’s compatibility information for the exact product; an unidentified plastic is no basis for promising a successful bond. Loctite plastic adhesive guidance
- Choose a method for the material and damage. A plastic-labeled two-part epoxy may suit some rigid, close-fitting repairs. PE and PP often need a dedicated bonding system and activator rather than an ordinary adhesive. A gap, hole, missing section, or flexible component may call for a different product or repair method.
- Dry-fit and prepare the joint. Check that the pieces meet in the intended position before opening or mixing adhesive. Bonding surfaces should be clean and dry. Slightly roughen a smooth surface only if the selected product’s instructions allow it. Work in a ventilated area and protect yourself and nearby surfaces as the label directs.
- Apply and hold. Use any supplied activator exactly as directed, including any specified drying interval. Apply adhesive as instructed, bring the pieces together, and hold them still until the product’s stated set time. Tape or a small clamp may help only if suitable for the part and permitted by the product directions. Avoid repositioning after joining.
- Wait for the stated cure and inspect. Follow the product’s separate handling and full-cure instructions before using the item. A stated bond-strength time is not automatically a full-cure time or permission to put the repair under load.
What glue works on plastic?
Use the adhesive maker’s compatibility list rather than choosing by a broad label such as “plastic glue.” Compatibility, gap-filling ability, flexibility, exposure resistance, working time, and cure time all vary by product. Henkel’s U.S. product page lists Loctite Epoxy Plastic as a two-part, 25 ml product for several materials, including ABS, PVC, and fiberglass. Henkel describes resistance to water, solvents, moisture, and impact, and states a high-strength bond in 20 to 25 minutes. Those are claims for that product; the stated bond time is not a universal cure time or a guarantee that a repaired item is safe to load. Loctite Epoxy Plastic product details

Can polyethylene or polypropylene be glued?
PE and PP are difficult to bond with many ordinary adhesives. Henkel describes a dedicated plastics-bonding system that uses an activator for these materials, so do not assume a general-purpose epoxy will work just because it bonds other plastics. Check the system’s instructions and compatibility list for the exact material and intended repair. Loctite plastic adhesive guidance

Vehicle components need a damage- and substrate-specific procedure; household repair directions are not a substitute. 3M’s automotive guidance maps different materials and damage types—such as scratches, holes or cracks, and broken tabs—to repair approaches. Its guidance specifies a polyolefin adhesion promoter for marked PP, PE, TPO, and EPDM, and warns against using that promoter on ABS. Follow the procedure and product compatibility information for the specific part rather than applying a household adhesive by analogy. 3M automotive plastic repair guidance

What should I avoid during a plastic repair?
- Do not treat a bond claim, quick set, or “high strength” description as proof that a repair is fully cured or suitable for a particular load.
- Do not use an adhesive unless its maker lists the plastic or provides instructions for that material.
- Do not clean up casually with solvents. Loctite warns that acetone is highly flammable and may damage some plastics; use only cleanup methods allowed by the selected product’s instructions. Loctite plastic adhesive guidance
- Do not improvise an adhesive repair for a part whose failure could compromise safety, structural support, pressure containment, food contact, or operation at high temperature.
