The original Auk Mini is a compact, open-system hydroponic garden for growing herbs from your own seeds—not a proprietary-pod machine. WIRED’s six-week review gave it 8/10, praising its simple setup and useful harvests while noting that plants can become leggy or crowded against the light if left untrimmed. Auk now promotes the different, newer Mini 2, so its instructions and growing schedule should not be confused with the original model.
What the original Auk Mini is—and what it is not
The original Auk Mini is a countertop hydroponic garden with four pots. You sow seeds in coconut coir, add the supplied nutrients, and grow plants beneath an overhead full-spectrum light. WIRED described its reservoir as 3 L and its daily light schedule as 17.5 hours on. Unlike a sealed pod system, it lets you choose your own seeds, although Auk also sells seeds and growing supplies. WIRED’s review of the original Auk Mini covers that first-generation model.
The product currently promoted by Auk is the Mini 2, a separate generation with different setup instructions and features. Its guide specifies a default 16-hours-on, 8-hours-off light schedule. Do not apply the original Mini’s 17.5-hour schedule or the first model’s review findings to Mini 2. Auk’s Mini 2 setup guide is the source for the newer model’s instructions.
What WIRED found when growing with the original Mini
WIRED reviewer Kat Merck reported testing the original for six weeks and rated it 8/10. Basil, cilantro, and parsley sprouted within a week in that test, and the herbs were harvestable a few weeks later. The reviewer reported substantial basil harvests over the test period, while noting that growth became untidy when a vacation interrupted regular harvesting. These are observations from one reviewer’s use, not controlled germination or yield data.

Strengths
- Use your own seeds. The open system gives growers freedom to choose seeds rather than relying on a proprietary pod format.
- Straightforward setup and maintenance. WIRED found the unit simple to get going and maintain.
- Useful quantities of herbs. The reviewer reported meaningful basil harvests during the six-week test.
- Designed for the counter. Its Scandinavian-influenced styling was one of the review’s positives.
Limitations to consider
- Plants need attention. The reviewer found herbs could become leggy or floppy if harvesting was delayed.
- Limited clearance beneath the light. At the tallest setting, basil touched the light and developed burned edges and spots during WIRED’s test. This is a reported experience, not a guaranteed outcome for every crop or growing condition.
- Warm-room mold concerns are not the same as a demonstrated failure. WIRED did not find mold while inspecting the unit in a cool room below 70°F. The review raised mold as a potential concern for pumpless systems in warmer rooms, rather than reporting mold in its test.
How to decide whether it fits your kitchen and growing habits
The Mini’s appeal depends on what you want to grow and how much tending you are willing to do. Before choosing a countertop garden, weigh these practical trade-offs:
- Seed freedom: The original Mini accepts your own seeds, which suits growers who want to choose varieties or use seeds they already have.
- Counter space and appearance: Consider whether its footprint and Scandinavian-influenced design work in the intended spot; the overhead light also needs room above the pots.
- Reservoir and refills: WIRED described the original reservoir as 3 L. The amount of time between refills will depend on growing conditions and plant use; the cited review does not establish a universal refill interval.
- Crop height: The short overhead light is a more important constraint for tall or fast-growing plants than for compact herbs.
- Regular pruning: If you often travel or do not want to harvest and trim plants regularly, the reported tendency toward untidy growth may be a drawback.
- Ongoing supplies: Compare what is included with the model you are considering and what you may need to replace. WIRED noted that replacement substrate for the original system is widely available, but that does not establish compatibility for every third-party product with Mini 2.
- Model generation: Confirm whether a listing is for the original Mini or Mini 2. Their schedules, features, and setup directions are not interchangeable.
Mini 2 setup and growing expectations are different
Auk’s current setup guide is for Mini 2, not the original model reviewed by WIRED. It says to put the light about 15 cm (6 in) above the pots, fill the reservoir to the max mark (about 3 L), and add six pumps each of Grow and Flavour nutrients. The guide sets the default light schedule at 16 hours on and 8 hours off.

- Place seeds in the included coco fiber. For basil and parsley, the guide illustrates covering seeds with coco fiber, then adding the supplied top layer.
- Set the light about 15 cm (6 in) above the pots and fill the reservoir to max, about 3 L.
- Add six pumps each of Grow and Flavour nutrients, then use the default 16-hours-on, 8-hours-off schedule.
- Raise the light as plants grow. Refill water and nutrients when the indicator turns red.
Auk says parsley can take up to two weeks to sprout and that most herbs are ready to harvest in four to six weeks. Those are the manufacturer’s expectations for Mini 2, not independently verified guarantees and not results from WIRED’s original Mini test.
