Should You Get a Home Generator? Pros, Cons, and How to Decide

A home generator can protect essential power during outages, but portable and standby systems demand different budgets, installation, fuel planning, and hands-on attention.

A home generator is worth considering when outages are frequent, costly, or put essential needs at risk—and when you can manage the equipment, fuel, maintenance, installation, and safe operation. A portable generator generally costs less and can be moved, but it requires manual setup and refueling. A standby generator costs more and needs professional installation, but can start automatically and serve selected circuits or a larger share of the home. The right choice depends on your critical electrical loads, outage pattern, fuel access, budget, and site—not just your home’s square footage.

What are the pros and cons of a home generator?

Both portable and standby generators can provide power during an outage. They differ in how much work they require, how they connect to your home, and how much capacity they can provide. Neither is automatically the better choice for every household.

Option Advantages Trade-offs
Portable generator Typically lower-cost than a standby system; movable; useful for some non-home activities; can supply selected household circuits when paired with a properly installed transfer switch. Requires manual setup and starting, outdoor placement, fuel planning and refills; may not support all desired loads. A transfer switch adds installation cost; extension cords limit use to compatible appliances.
Standby generator Permanently connected and designed to start automatically after utility power is lost; can be sized for selected circuits or a larger portion of the home. Natural gas or propane supply may reduce manual refueling. Higher equipment and installation burden; permanent siting; ongoing fuel and maintenance needs; requires professional load and site planning. Fuel availability and infrastructure matter.

These broad differences are described by Honda Power Equipment and Generac; neither establishes which option is best for a particular home.

Is a whole-house generator worth it?

“Whole house” is not a guarantee that every appliance can run at once. Backup capacity must be matched to the loads the system is intended to serve, including equipment with motors that draw extra power when starting. A system can be designed around essential circuits or a broader share of the home, but the design depends on actual electrical demand and generator capability.

Standby automation may be valuable if outages are common or you cannot reliably be home to deploy a portable unit. It comes with equipment, installation, fuel, and maintenance obligations. Whether that convenience justifies the cost depends on your household’s needs and outage pattern; there is no universal payback period established here.

What size generator do you need for your house?

Begin with the equipment you need during an outage, not the home’s square footage. List essentials such as refrigeration, heating equipment, a well pump, or medical devices, then identify operating and starting loads. Decide whether larger loads, such as air conditioning, must also be supported. Fuel type and the selected equipment affect the design.

  • Have a qualified professional assess the loads and site before selecting a standby system or household connection.

Generac’s sizing tool asks about household loads, fuel, and motor-starting requirements. Those inputs can help frame a load assessment; they are not a substitute for a qualified design. Generac also describes dealer load assessments for standby systems at its installation information page.

How does a portable generator connect to a home?

A portable generator can power compatible appliances through suitable outdoor-rated extension cords, or it can supply selected home circuits through a properly installed transfer switch. A transfer switch isolates those circuits from utility lines while connecting them to generator power. Honda explains the transfer-switch approach at Honda Power Equipment.

Never connect a portable generator directly to household wiring or utility lines, and do not use a homemade backfeed arrangement. For household circuits, consult a qualified electrician about a transfer switch and applicable local electrical requirements. Follow the generator’s owner’s manual.

How do you operate a generator safely?

Carbon monoxide (CO) from a generator can be fatal. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says to operate portable generators outdoors at least 20 feet from homes and other buildings, with exhaust directed away from doors, windows, and vents. Never run one inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, or other enclosed area. Keep working CO alarms in the home, follow the owner’s manual, and consider a model with a CO shut-off feature. That feature does not make indoor or close-to-building operation safe. See the CPSC generator safety guidance.

In a February 10, 2025 release, CPSC said an average of about 100 consumers die in the United States each year from CO poisoning from portable generators, citing its latest Non-Fire Carbon Monoxide Deaths report. This is a national annual average, not a household-level probability or a count for a particular year. CPSC’s May 27, 2026 release quotes Acting Chairman Peter Feldman: “Hurricanes and severe storms can turn deadly long after the wind and rain stop.” Read the 2026 CPSC release.

Which option fits your situation?

A portable generator may fit if…

  • You need backup for a limited set of appliances or circuits rather than a broad share of the home.
  • You can safely place, start, connect, monitor, and refuel it during an outage.
  • Portability has value beyond home backup.
  • You are prepared to use suitable extension cords or pay for a properly installed transfer switch.

A standby generator may fit if…

  • Automatic startup and a permanently connected system are important to you.
  • You want a professional to design backup for selected circuits or a larger share of the home.
  • Your site and fuel supply can support the equipment.
  • You are prepared for higher equipment and installation costs, plus ongoing fuel and maintenance.

Before deciding

Gather your outage frequency and typical duration, critical loads, fuel access, budget, and existing electrical setup. Local siting and permitting requirements also need to be checked for your property; they vary by location. A qualified electrician or generator dealer can assess loads and installation constraints before you commit.
