For most finished wood kitchen cabinets, use warm water, a little mild dish soap, and a soft, wrung-out cloth. Clean a small area gently, wipe away soap with a separate clean damp cloth, then dry promptly. Check the cabinet maker’s care instructions and test an inconspicuous spot first; too much moisture or an incompatible cleaner can damage the finish.
Before you clean: identify the surface and finish
Cabinets may be painted or stained wood, veneer, or unsealed wood, and the right care depends on the surface and its finish. Follow the cabinet maker’s instructions if available. If you cannot tell what finish you have, test the cleaning method somewhere inconspicuous before treating a visible area. Lowe’s also recommends matching cleaning to the cabinet surface and taking care not to damage the finish: How to Clean Wood Cabinets.
Unsealed wood needs particular caution with moisture. Even on finished cabinets, liquid can harm the finish or seep into seams, so do not soak the surface.
Remove sticky grease with mild soap and water
- Mix a mild solution. Add a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid to warm water. The cited guidance supports mild soap and water, but does not establish one universal dilution ratio. See Dawn’s guide to cleaning greasy wood kitchen cabinets and the cabinetry care guide.
- Dampen a soft cloth. Use microfiber or another soft, lint-free cloth, then wring it out so it is damp rather than wet. Put the solution on the cloth instead of spraying or pouring it onto the cabinet.
- Wipe a small area gently. Use light pressure. If grease remains, repeat the mild-soap pass instead of immediately switching to a strong degreaser.
- Remove soap residue. Wipe the cleaned area with a separate, clean cloth dampened with plain water.
- Dry promptly. Use a clean, soft cloth, paying attention to edges, trim, and seams where water can collect.
The cabinetry care guide recommends using “suds from a common dish washing liquid and a damp cloth” to wipe away general soils or grease. This is a first step for typical finished cabinetry, not a guarantee for every finish.

Cleaners and tools to avoid
Abrasive cleaners and tools can scratch or dull cabinet finishes. Avoid scouring pads and steel wool, as well as bleach and ammonia, on wood finishes. Keep moisture to a minimum and dry the cabinet after cleaning.
Do not assume vinegar, baking soda, citrus solvent, oil soap, or a multipurpose degreaser is compatible with your cabinets. Compatibility depends on the finish; check the cabinet maker’s care guide and the cleaner’s label before using anything beyond mild dish soap. Bona advises against spraying cleaner directly because excess moisture may harm paint or finish, but its guidance is specific to its own cleaning recommendations and does not establish that its product suits every cabinet: Bona’s kitchen cabinet cleaning guide.

If the cabinet is still tacky
If the tackiness remains after you have wiped away soap residue and dried the surface, stop rather than escalating to a stronger cleaner. The finish itself may need attention, but the cause cannot be determined for a particular cabinet without an assessment. Ask the cabinet maker or a qualified refinisher what to do next.
