No reliable evidence cited here shows that simmering vinegar removes odors throughout a home. It may add a vinegar smell, but adding a different odor is not the same as removing the source. To deal with a persistent smell, identify and address its cause first; ventilate with clean outdoor air when conditions allow and it is safe to do so.
Does simmering vinegar get rid of odors?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not test or recommend simmering vinegar as a whole-home deodorizer. Its guidance on indoor odors instead advises limiting odor sources, reducing exposure, and providing adequate ventilation. No authoritative recipe or effectiveness study establishes that heating vinegar clears odors from every room.
Vinegar can be useful in some surface-cleaning situations: a National Academies consensus report hosted by the EPA describes acidic cleaners such as vinegar as effective at removing some basic molecules. That limited surface-cleaning mechanism does not show that simmering vinegar treats odors carried through indoor air, or that it removes their source.
Why covering an odor may not solve the problem
An odor can point to a source that needs attention, but smell alone is not a dependable safety test. The EPA cautions that some hazards are odorless, that people may become less aware of a strong odor over time, and that an odor can affect people differently. It advises against relying on smells or complaints about smells to judge whether an indoor environment is safe.

Some odors, including vinegar, are harmless for most people when used properly, according to the EPA. That limited statement is not proof that heating vinegar is beneficial, safe for everyone, or effective at deodorizing a home.
How to address a whole-home odor
- Look for the source. Check likely areas and materials, such as rubbish, food residue, damp surfaces, drains, or stored items. Remove or clean the cause when you can do so safely; adding another smell does not address it.
- Ventilate when appropriate. If outdoor air is clean and opening windows or using exhaust ventilation is safe, bring in fresh air to help reduce indoor pollutants. Do not rely on ventilation that could introduce smoke, outdoor pollution, or other contaminants.
- Consider filtration only as a supplement. Choose an air cleaner and filter for the pollutant you are trying to capture, and check whether the unit is suitable for the room. The EPA says filtration can supplement source control and ventilation, but no air cleaner or filter removes every pollutant.
- Keep indoor humidity in range. The EPA recommends keeping relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. This is general indoor-air guidance, not a specific treatment for every odor.
For a persistent or unexplained smell, the right response depends on its source. Do not try to cover a possible air-quality or combustion problem with vinegar or fragrance; investigate the cause and seek qualified help when needed.

Does boiling vinegar work as an air freshener?
There is no established evidence here that boiling or simmering vinegar freshens the air by removing odor-causing pollutants throughout a home. Even if the vinegar smell becomes noticeable, that does not demonstrate that another odor has been eliminated. The EPA’s general advice is to reduce pollution at its source and ventilate with clean outdoor air where feasible.
Do not mix vinegar with bleach or other household cleaners. The EPA warns against mixing cleaning products unless their labels direct it because the combination can create toxic vapors.
