Its public tour ran from August 9 through December 22, 2024, and has ended; the house remains a useful design reference for site-responsive construction, indoor-outdoor entertaining, regional craft, and landscape planning.
Where the 2024 Idea House was—and when it was open
The house was built in the Kiawah River community on Johns Island, about 20 miles from Charleston. Kiawah River describes it as set between sprawling live oaks along Abbapoola Creek, with water views from nearly every space. The community’s tour information listed the home at 4,400 square feet and public tours from August 9 through December 22, 2024. Kiawah River’s Idea House page
Southern Living featured the project in its September 2024 issue, which its launch announcement said would reach newsstands August 23, 2024. Dotdash Meredith’s 2024 announcement
How the design responds to the Lowcountry site
Farmhouse references meet creek views
The design drew on the simple character of farmhouses associated with Charleston’s Sea Islands, while taking advantage of the site’s landscape and views across Abbapoola Creek. Rather than treating the water as a backdrop for one room, the community describes views from nearly every space. For builders and homeowners, the useful idea is the relationship between house placement, openings, outdoor areas, and the site’s mature trees—not a specific floor plan detail the published descriptions do not provide. Indoor-outdoor entertaining
The project announcement identifies indoor and outdoor entertaining areas, a pool, and a guest carriage house. These are confirmed features of the overall project; the available descriptions do not establish a complete room-by-room layout or the exact connections among those spaces. Among the named products, Monogram documented three models in the home’s “Friend’s Entrance”: the ZIW303NPPII 30-inch panel-ready wine sommelier, UNC15NPWII 15-inch panel-ready nugget ice maker, and ZIDI240HII 24-inch panel-ready double-drawer refrigerator. They are examples of featured appliances in an entertaining-oriented area, not requirements for recreating the home’s design. Monogram’s Idea House page

Landscape: coastal forest character with garden structure
Southern Living Plants describes the landscape concept as combining the natural character of a coastal forest with the more formal traditions of Charleston gardens. Landscape architect Scott Parker and Steph Green of Contained Creations developed the landscape and container designs. That pairing offers a practical way to think about a Lowcountry garden: retain a sense of the surrounding coastal landscape while using more deliberate forms and container planting to shape outdoor spaces. Project scale and its later reported reception
Dotdash Meredith identified the home as 4,400 square feet in its 2024 announcement. In a retrospective, Kiawah River reported that more than 20,000 people visited the Idea House and that the residence was under contract for $5.4 million. The attendance and contract figures are Kiawah River’s reporting; the contract amount should not be read as an independently confirmed closing price. Dotdash Meredith’s announcement named 18 sponsors whose products and designs appeared in the home, including Alabama Stone Co. (a Vetter Stone division), Clopay, Command, 3M CLAW, Discover South Carolina, Heavyweight Hanging Solution, Ivory Soap, James Hardie, Kerrygold, Marvin, Monogram Luxury Appliances, Pedigree, Propane Education & Research Council, Regina Andrew, Sherwin-Williams, Southern Living Home Collection at Dillard’s, Southern Living Plant Collection, and Zuri Premium Decking. The same announcement said a Southern Living house plan for the home was available for purchase at SouthernLivingHousePlans.com. That is a 2024 announcement, not confirmation of present-day plan availability or current product stock. Dotdash Meredith’s sponsor and plan announcement
The sources identify selected contributors, features, and appliance models, but do not provide a complete, verified room-by-room product schedule. The project is best used as inspiration for its broader design decisions: fitting the house to a waterfront setting, supporting indoor-outdoor entertaining, drawing from local building traditions, and making regional creative work part of the interior.
